Gypsy Turtles - Is It Mackinac or Mackinaw?

From the site: Gypsy Turtles - Is It Mackinac or Mackinaw?

From the Mackinac Island Visitor Center: I guess that means we are the Gypsy Mackinacs! On Wednesday, we hopped on the Star Line Ferry to Mackinac Island to spend the day. As no motor vehicles are allowed on the island, we struggled with whether or not to take our bikes to explore the island. After vacillating back and forth, we finally chose to leave the bikes home, take a carriage tour and do some exploring on foot. Of interesting note: Mackinac Island was our nation’s second National Park after Yellowstone. It remained a National Park from 1875-1895 when it was taken over by the state of Michigan and became Michigan’s first state park. Over 80% of the island is state park property and remains in a natural state for all ...Read more...

RV Boondocking News - Squeezing watts out of your solar panels -- while shady camping

From the site: RV Boondocking News - Squeezing watts out of your solar panels -- while shady camping

As we're presently traveling in the Pacific Northwest, our boondocking skills are getting a bit of a challenge in an environment so different from the Southwest. Last night when we rolled into bed, we began wondering if we'd maybe need more blankets -- it seemed so cold! But by morning, it seemed like there were too many blankets. What goes on? A little head scratching revealed that when we rolled into bed, the heavy humidity had made the blankets clammy, and by morning, our personal Btu output had driven out the damp, making them much toastier. The transition to the Northwest also has made some kind-of-weather-related changes for us. The Northwest's famous (infamous?) rain makes for the growth of beautiful trees. And that's great on a hot s ...Read more...

That porpoise flashing you a Blue Moon is "Marathon Man" Leonard, diving into freezing water that only a few weeks ago was a block of ice. Leon prefers skinny dipping, but there were ladies present and he is, after all, an Austin, Texan gentleman. This weeks excursion into the mountains took Leon, Bobbie and her bosses, Tamara and Bruce, and yours truly  to Columbine Lake, a 7 mile round trip hike that ascends to over 12,000 feet above sea level. We were pleasantly surprised by the quantity and quality of flowers persisting into mid august. A snowier than normal winter translated into a late spring, which set wildflower season back a couple of weeks and so, too, their demise. Nights grow cooler here in La Crevice. Th ...Read more...

Living The Dream... - Wednesday, August 13, 2014 (Monck Provincial Park, Nicola Lake, Quilchena, BC)

From the site: Living The Dream... - Wednesday, August 13, 2014 (Monck Provincial Park, Nicola Lake, Quilchena, BC)

The rumbling of thunder woke us up in the wee hours of the morning and then there was the pitter-patter of rain drops, so Steve got up and closed all of the windows. The rain really didn't amount to much but when we got up this morning, it was cloudy/smokey and a lot more humid than it had been. The day proved to be one of those "mixed bag" kind of days...some sun, a bit of rain but mostly cloudy. The area was also under a severe thunderstorm warning "...capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain". Luckily it didn't materialize and the warning was lifted late in the afternoon. With the weather warning, Steve hummed and hawed about whether to go ahead and launch the boat, but decided he might as well. So late morni ...Read more...

OUR NEWELL ADVENTURE - Local Knowledge....

From the site: OUR NEWELL ADVENTURE - Local Knowledge....

One thing I need to keep reminding myself is to ask for referrals from people I know in a given locale for services I need.  When I needed the water pump replaced on the VW I asked Debby (Bill and Debby's Wild Ride) who is from South Lake Tahoe originally.  She referred me to Eloise Autmotive who, in turn, referred me to Higher Ground Autoworx.  Now, when I needed new tires why didn't I call John at Higher Ground first?  I'm still asking myself that question.  Instead, on Wednesday, I head immediately for Les Schwab Tires (a national chain) to get new shoes for the Beetle.  I have bought tires from America's Tire Store, and Discount Tires in the past and had good experience, and always liked the fact they have ...Read more...

Roadtreking | The small motorhome lifestyle - Apps for the Open Road

From the site: Roadtreking | The small motorhome lifestyle - Apps for the Open Road

Apps for the Open Road I’m attending the big Family Motorcoach Association Reunion and Rally this week in Redmond, OR and just did a seminar called Apps for the Open Road in which I share some of my favorite apps and online resources for RVers. Now we RVers all have our favorite technology devices, with Android and Apple smartphones and tablets accounting for the vast majority. Most apps now come in versions for different platforms. Most, but not all. My talk at the Apps for the Open Road seminar I am a pretty diehard Apple fan. Though I’ve used Android gizmos, I keep coming back to Apple, especially the iPhone. So, that said, let me share my list. If you are an Abdroid or Windows or Blackberry user, these may or may not apply. ...Read more...

Artifacts from ancient Maritime Archaic Indians, Palaeoeskimo, and Beothuk, and more recent Europeans and Mi’kmaqs , all who made central Newfoundland their home, form the permanent displays in this small museum. When we visited the temporary gallery had artwork and an interesting exhibit about the lives of women in the fishing villages during the early 1900s.   The museum is accessible.    Parking is limited.
