After 43 years, a return to Indiana Dunes The last time I was at the Indiana Dunes was on a field trip my senior year in high school. That trip was so cool that I knew some day I had to return. Finally 40 some odd years later the Sand Dunes was once came into my life as we traveled in our Class B van. My trip back in high school studied the ecological succession first conceptualized by H. C. Cowles when he studies the sand dunes back in the early 1900’s. In short, it theorizes how plants, and animals progress as they move from water to land. As you move away from the beach, bare sand changes to dune grass, then small shrubs, then soft woods like poplars. The final succession is the hard woods like oaks and maple trees.
