Wheeling It - Making “Firsts” At Quartzsite, AZ (& Announcing a Meet-Up On 23rd!)
From the site: Wheeling It - Making “Firsts” At Quartzsite, AZ (& Announcing a Meet-Up On 23rd!)
Well we’ve made it to Quartzsite, the biggest RV gathering on earth. Every year around the last two weeks of January hundreds of thousands of RVers come from all over and converge on a teeny little dusty town in the Arizona desert to gather, socialize, show-off and shop. Almost everyone boondocks and every type of rig is here from million dollar Prevosts to classic Bluebirds (just down the road from us) to vans & car-campers. It’s crazy, it’s busy & it is so….much…fun! In the “circle” at iRV2 gathering in Quartzsite AZ in La Posa South. Do you see us? We dropped by last year to enjoy the show and this year we decided to come back and do something we’ve never EVER done. We joined a gr ...Read more...

Our current siteSince we moved sites at the end of December, I haven't posted a photo of our current site. We had to move because Winter Texans/Snowbirds who return in flocks to this park year after year have their sites locked up long-term. Being the newbies, we get to move sites even though we live here year-round. In our 1-3/4 years here, this is the sixth site we've been in. It's been fun getting to know the park and our neighbors. Our current site is between two park models which is fine with us. They shelter us a little from the winds. From our dining room window, where I sit to blog, there is a perfect view of the entrance to the park. The park office is the beige building behind the brown MH.Today, as I was typing my previous blog, ab ...Read more...

From the site: Riveted - Waldport and Alsea Bay, Oregon
Today we're in Waldport, camped out on the Alsea Bay. Not too much to report today, since mainly we're just working. We took some time mid-day to walk around town a bit though. We walked over the Alsea Bay Bridge and back, through the main part of town, along the beach, and then back to the Airstream. Our walk was just over 4 miles, and I think we've got a pretty good idea of the area. Here are some snaps from the walk: Lint Slough: Screaming monkey driftwood: The Alsea Bay Bridge: Bridge detail: Bramble: Pattern below the bridge: Okay... ...Read more...

I slept in until 7:20 this morning...that doesn't happen often! And I don't even remember getting up at all through the night. I had one of those rare full night, deep sleeps...wish it would happen more often! It was going on 11:00 by the time we had gone through our usual morning routine...it was also exercise day. We hadn't had much luck with Skype calls lately but did manage one this morning with my brother and sister-in-law (Dennis and Suzanne) who are in Indio, CA. I guess all of the RVers around here were at the RV show...not home using their Verizon MiFi. We had a great chat and got caught up...another brother, Dwight, is flying down from Victoria, BC tomorrow. Sorry we're going to miss him...but we did just see him while home at Chri ...Read more...

After an evening with Monty I’m not sure which is more compelling: The man himself, or his statements…“Wine is the world’s only resurrected beverage” or “A 100% Texas grown, barreled, and bottled Pinot Noir that will knock your socks off”. To be perfectly honest when we saw Bar Z Winery on the Harvest Hosts website I thought “Looks like a decent place to park but the wines will likely be rocket fuel!” I’m happy to say I was wrong on both accounts! When we arrived to the Winery in Canyon, TX Monty told us to park it right up by […] ...Read more...

The past two mornings we’ve been getting up at 4:45am PST so we could try and book Bahia Honda State Park in Big Pine Key Florida. Campsites are available for reservation at 8am EST, 11 months prior to the day of arrival. Last year I learned there’s some fierce competition to get a spot. I asked my parents to try and help us make a reservation from their 2 computers while we did the same on our 3. A couple of us tried hitting submit a second before, and while the other two tried hitting precisely at 8am EST/ 5am PST. Unfortunately, it didn’t work. At 8:00:01 all previously available spots were booked. We tried again today, but again no luck. I guess I’m going to have to check back daily for cancellations. Dinn ...Read more...

A few months ago Cindy and I flew a film crew (Roam Media) down from New York City to have them put together some video footage for us. Tom and Ana setting up the slider for one of the Time Lapse segments you see in the video We wanted them to be able to get aerial footage of the motel and it’s grounds so we could host it on our Low-Key Hideaway website. Probably half the phone calls we get from guests making reservations are asking things like “Are we water front, bay front, ocean front?” “Are the RV Spaces right on the water?” “Do you have a dock?” “Is the motel elevated to look over the water?” “Is Pat really as good looking as he is in all the photos” …..etc Tom ...Read more...

We love to meet up with friends along the way and while here in Quartzsite, we have been able to do just that.In fact, the day before we left for Quartzsite, we were able to hook up with Ron and Marta, who are friends from our Albuquerque days (1986-1988). Ron and I played on the church softball team a couple of years. We had been in contact with Paul and Bobbi since our time together at the Santa Fe Habitat build a few years ago. Paul organized a group for some Disaster Relief work in Henryville, IN about a year ago and we last saw them there. The Cholla Cactus GardenOne of the neatest and most accessible exhibits in the Joshua Tree National Park is the Cholla Cactus Garden. It is located on the Pinto Basin Road with a spectacular view of the Pinto Basin as a backdrop. Being that this road is a major park road and smoothly paved makes this spot easily accessible to all. In fact there is a nice parking area right in the middle of the garden. Once out of your car there is a level gravel loop walking path to get you right inside among the cholla. It’s a nature walk so pick up the little pamphlet at the entrance to read about what is marked along the way. It’s quite interesting how all the plants and animals eek out a living in this harsh high desert environment. &nb ...Read more...

Yessiree, that is indeed what I said alright. So, here we are a whopping 20 miles down the road in Bisbee Arizona and what a GREAT place this is!!We merely stopped in the town for a little look-see on our way into New Mexico. After about 1 hour, Doug was ready to buy a house here. I am not sure how I will actually get him out of this town!! This is an amazing little old mining town. THE OLD CONGRESS PIONEER CEMETERY AT THE END OF GHOST TOWN ROAD These gorgeous Arizona weather days just seem to keep going on forever this year. What a pleasure to be in what I feel are perfect day time temperatures of low to mid 70’s. Fingers doubly crossed that it will continue. Peter & Leslie expressed an interest in seeing the 2 old cemeteries at the end of our Ghost Town Road so it was off we went for the long drive of less than a mile. The oldest of the 2 cemeteries dates back into the late 1800’s & is located where the mining town of Congress once stood right next to one of the largest Gold producing mines in Arizona. Ft. Myers, FL It seems that it’s been a while since our last post, but we’ve just been sitting in Ft. Myers enjoying the weather. OK, maybe we haven’t been enjoying the weather, as it has been mostly cloudy and cool (for southwest Florida) with a bit of rain and wind mixed in. So our outdoor activities have been a bit limited during the past few weeks. We did manage some time with friends we have made in our travels. We met Steve and Esther on our recent cruise. IntroductionThis was our second visit to Joshua Tree National Park in California. After having a spectacular time last year we knew we would return once again to enjoy the hiking, camping and photographic opportunities the park offers. Joshua Tree NP has many campgrounds to choose from. We find the one called Belle to be best suited for us. The others are either too far away from the main park attractions, too busy or the spots are more suited to tents than RVs. Belle is a little away from the heart of the park but not too far, maybe 15 minutes to ½ hour from the main attractions. Our Favorite CampgroundWe planned it out to arrive on a Tuesday hoping the park would be less busy and we could score a nice camp spot. We were ...Read more...
