Love Your RV! - Things We Pack For Extended RV Trips

From the site: Love Your RV! - Things We Pack For Extended RV Trips

Over the course of almost 5 years of full-time RV living, we have had a chance to find out what we really need to pack and what we can do without. The first year we seemed to take everything under the sun. Much of it just sat unused. Every year before heading out for our 6-month long snowbird journey we go through the whole RV and pick out all the items we can do without. As I add new upgrades to the RV such as solar panels and extra batteries this fat trimming becomes more and more important. OUR NEWELL ADVENTURE - Shifting focus....

From the site: OUR NEWELL ADVENTURE - Shifting focus....

As our time in Spokane with family draws to an end my thoughts turn more and more to our journey south.  I've been searching through the blogs of people I know who have found some interesting places to boondock along the route we will be following for the next few weeks, and I am getting very excited about the possibilities that await us.  However, for just a little while Monday we began to have second thoughts about our plan to follow US 395 southward as the weather forecasts do not look, at first blush, conducive to off the grid living.  Then it occurred to both of us, almost at the same time, that this is precisely why we added two more solar panels....so we could boondock in less than ideal circumstances.......so that is ...Read more...

Oh, the Places They Go! - Hiking the Mt. Whitney Trail

From the site: Oh, the Places They Go! - Hiking the Mt. Whitney Trail

Lone Pine, CA There are two trails that begin at the Whitney Portal, 8,000 feet up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.  We did one of the trails last week with Eric and Laurel.  This morning we headed back up to the portal to hike the other trail, the Mt. Whitney Trail.  If you hike the full length of this trail it is eleven miles to the top of Mt. Whitney, the highest point in the 48 contiguous states, with an elevation gain of over 6,100 feet.  We may be crazy, but we’re not that crazy.  Our goal today was to hike up three miles to Lone Pine Lake, with a gain in elevation of just under 2,000 feet. Four down and four to go. Congratulations on making it to the halfway point of your 8 week 5k training plan! Things this week are about to get interesting; oh yes, very, very interesting. You’ll notice the second workout here at Week 5 has those fast intervals again. Now that you’ve done those already a couple times, try to amp up your speed even more. Be safe and smart, sure, but also be fast. The rest of this week’s workouts should be done at a slower, more comfortable pace. And now here’s something completely new. On your last workout of this week, you’ll be running for distance, not time. This will take a little prep work on your part, because you’ll need to map out a 2 mile stretch to do the workout ...Read more...

From the site: On the Road of Retirement - Enjoyed our stay in Titusville Fl. even after Murphy visited (again)…

While we thought our tribulations were behind us old man Murphy had one more trick up his sleeve. It happened on our drive further south as we left Flagler Beach, Florida. Somehow from the time we left to the time we pulled into our next spot in Titusville, Florida we apparently lost our exterior hot water heater vent cover. How we lost it is a mystery and I can only surmise that after we scrubbed the oil off the exterior of the motorhome we must have somehow inadvertently un-latched the vent cover which simply fell off on our way to Titusville. Oh well, such is life on the road. I did call Tiffin Motorhomes who told me I could get an unpainted (white) replacement for about $90.00. The same vent cover can be bought on eBay for less than $ ...Read more...

We were scheduled to leave the Whalers Rest Thousand Trails near Newport, Oregon today, but by Sunday evening I had had all I could take of the cold, the wet, and the dreariness and told Miss Terry to get ready to hit the road Monday morning instead. And wouldn’t you know it, after days of heavy clouds and rain we awoke to a beautiful blue sky overhead! But the weatherman said more rain was on its way so we decided to get out while the getting was good. We left the Thousand Trails a little before 11 AM, took US Highway 20 east to Interstate 5 and turned south. After years as a longhaul trucker, these days his philosophy is: “Why get some place faster, when later will do just fine and you’ll arrive relaxed.” Butch travels in his 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 4WD flatbed truck and custom-made 2014 pop-top Alaskan camper. On this trip to visit with Jimmy and me, Butch brought with him his new best friend: ‘Oakley’ a four-month old half-Catahoula and half-Border Collie. In conjunction with our Fit RV 5k Challenge that’s going on through Thanksgiving 2015, you might have noticed I’ve been writing weekly running tips to help improve your training. This week, it’s all about eating before your run. Have you ever headed out the door for a run right after eating a huge heavy meal? I have, and it isn’t pretty. Between the cramps and the feeling that there’s a giant watermelon bobbing around in your stomach, it makes for a rather miserable run. There’ll be no PRs happening on those days… Whether you’re a seasoned runner or a newbie, fueling adequately plays a big part in how well your run will go. From the site: Winds of Destiny - RVLife - The Deserr Bar (near Parker, AZ), 10/24/2015

Today we had the interesting experience of visiting the very remote Nellie E Saloon, known simply as The Desert Bar. It is located in the Buckskin Mountains on property that was once an old copper mining camp. The owner acquired the land in 1975 and opened the bar in 1983. An unmarked dirt road (5.3 miles south of Buckskin State Park) on the left traveling south on Rte 95 is the beginning of a rough and rocky 5-mile drive to the bar. This is through desert terrain so be sure to bring water with you. There were many 4-wheel drive and off-road vehicles on the road (we were driving our Mini Countryman). When The Desert Bar first opened in 1983, there was only a temporary three-sided structure and water was brought into the site in a ...Read more...

Lone Pine, CA Friends, Eric and Laurel (Raven and Chickadee), arrived in Lone Pine a few days ago.  They are avid hikers so we asked them to join us to do a hike down the Whitney Portal National Recreation Trail.  The trail is four miles long and runs from the Whitney Portal (8,360 feet) to the Lone Pine Campground (5,640 feet).  With a change in elevation of 2,720 feet, we followed the rangers recommendation and left our Jeep at the campground and drove to the Whitney Portal in their truck.  That made for a nice, easy hike down along the Lone Pine Creek.  Once back at the campground we drove the Jeep back up and retrieved the truck. “You appear to have the worst luck with refrigerators,” said my friend Tom from Huntsville, yesterday. Our trip southwest has been good despite being plagued with a few technological failures. First it was little things, like clearance light bulbs.  Our Airstream is a 2005 so it doesn’t have LED clearance lights, and after a decade the bulbs are all starting to blow.  I have replaced two in the last week with new bulbs from my spares kit, and it’s clear that I should just replace all of them at the next opportunity to borrow a ladder. We had hoped for yet another uneventful travel day but it got off to a rough start. First of all we had oil all over the front of our RV like someone took a spray bottle and sprayed the whole front of it and all down the sides. Then I remembered that a semi-truck passed us on the way here and had a ton of smoke bellowing out of his stacks. I am guessing he had blown something and was leaving a trail of oil in his path on all the vehicles he passed. Fortunately we were in a park that allowed washing of rigs so after an hour or so we had a clean, oil free, motorhome again.       Then the next morning as we were packing to leave the passenger side bedroom slide didn’t want to retract. From the site: Cheap RV Living.com - Snowbirds: Boondocking Sedona

My Sedona camp with it’s stunning view. You can see my trailer to the far left. For the last month I’ve been struggling with a  classic problem that most snowbirds face which is that different elevations and latitudes rarely change temperature at exactly the same time. For example, if we are in the Arizona desert in the Spring and its becoming uncomfortably hot in March, the high country is still snowed in and uncomfortably cold. That’s exactly what’s happened to me in the last month except on the reverse end of my annul migration; heading south for the winter. The storms we’ve had have given us the gift of gorgeous light!
