The Lundy 5 - Oregon Trail

From the site: The Lundy 5 - Oregon Trail

We hitched our wagon and traveled the Oregon Trail today. It's so pretty! No wonder so many braved it back then. :) We noticed a storm in our rear view mirrors and stopped to wait it out.   It was mostly just lots of wind, so lots of fun! Our beautiful lunch stop. We almost wouldn't mind turning around and driving this one again.  Almost.  ...Read more...

From the site: Uploads by RVgeeks - RV QUICK TIP: Gray Tank & Sensor Cleaning

RV QUICK TIP: Gray Tank & Sensor Cleaning Besides water, an RV gray tank (or "grey" if you trend more British) takes in lots of greasy, sticky substances. These include food particles & residue from preparing meals and washing dishes, soap, shampoo, toothpaste & even body oils. After a while, it can gum up your holding tank sensors, causing a false reading on your tank monitors. Cleaning out the gray tank and sensors is a really simple task, since there's a readily available liquid designed to break up all of the crud that can build up in the tank: automatic dishwasher detergent. The gel type is easy to flush down the drain, and goes right to work breaking down and dislodging greasy build-up. To calibrate the holding tank m ...Read more...

From the site: Van-Tramp.com - Boondocking in Teton National Forest

Our camp site on our first night Just across the road from the Teton National Park, up an unmarked gravel road leading into the forest, is one of the best boondocking locations I have ever been too. I’ve camped here before, back in June of 2011, and enjoyed it so much I was happy to repeat the adventure. This was a planned stop where I stayed for 6 days before moving on through Yellowstone and towards Glacier National Park. This time we would not be alone. Other RV’ers were already occupying the site that has the premium view, but since we had camped there in the past it was our turn to camp one site over. We still had a view, just that they were part of it. Conor and I have a few things scheduled over the week, but for the most ...Read more...

Riveted - Aluminogan Day Two

From the site: Riveted - Aluminogan Day Two

Today was spectacular. We did an awesome group hike up the road, around the back and to the top of the mountain, and then back down the front to our campsite (about 4 miles). Some shots from the hike: Interesting sign at some of the neighboring property: Zoom in here: Evidence left from a lightning-caused fire: We hiked about 2 miles to the top of the hill overlooking Leigh & Brian's property (and our very tiny, far away enclave of aluminum...right in the middle tiny dots of gray): Looking back toward the top of the ridge: Back at camp we... ...Read more...

To simplify... - Hiking Chops

From the site: To simplify... - Hiking Chops

Until now, hiking has always been a pretty modest affair for your humble blogger, limited mainly to hour-or-so jaunts in the vicinity of the campsite. Strictly amateur stuff, but as I've increasingly been made aware that the best nature has to offer cannot be accessed from a vehicle, the desire to push my hiking chops to the next level has taken hold. On that note, check out the new hydration pack at my side in the above shot, taken the other day in mid-hike at the Black Canyons of the Gunnison National Park. It's a key upgrade that should drastically increase my range, and as I continue to gear up while slowly getting myself into better shape in the coming weeks, I look forward to setting out on increasingly ambitious day hikes.&nb ...Read more...

Thursday August 22, 2013Sunset Point RV ParkLubec, Maine   **I’ve been having quite a bit of trouble with the internet in the early mornings and later evenings here.  Yesterday’s post on the gorgeous hiking on Campobello Island was up and down so if you have not seen it and you’d like to, you can read it here.     It’s a foggy morn in Lubec town.   I’m learning that morning fog is not the exception here, it is the rule.  A clear sky sunny morning is the exception. Even in the fog, Cecile and her husband are serious birders and point out things to me that I would never see without their spotting scope.   The fog is pretty heavy this morning but there are birds in close on ...Read more...

From the site: Workin' RVers - he's a horny guy!

Monday and Tuesday are our days off of work so we really like to take advantage of the time to enjoy everything that the Black Hills has to offer. We normally spend our time sightseeing on the bike as there are really no bad roads to ride around here. Monday we took a nice circular route from Custer to New Castle Wyoming and then up to Deadwood and back home. We really enjoy our time riding and the stress of everyday living just slips away with each passing mile.Just outside of Hill City there are large signs warning passing motorist to beware of Big Horn Sheep in the area. We pass these signs all the time and have yet to ever see a sheep or even "signs" that a sheep has been in the vicinity. Monday as we rounded a curve we saw a motor home ...Read more...

From the site: Dave & Diane throwing caution to the wind - Travel day to Ronks PA. Just outside Intercourse

Tuesday 8/20/13 was a travel again. Another short travel day of only 70 miles. I think all of our travel days are under 100 miles this month or at least close to it. And I don’t mind. We were all ready to hit the road by 9:30, pretty typical for us. I always do a Map quest print out for our travel day and punch in our destination in our GPS. Sort of our check & double check system plus I normally have the route somewhat in my head. On this particular travel day I knew in my head I wanted to just head out route 30 for the most part making our travels all through small towns and country sides. And that is what I had printed out from Map quest also. So away we went!!! It didn’t take long until the GPS was barking out orders to ...Read more...

From the site: The MoHo and Other Traveling Tales - Six Days off the Grid

Waking early Wednesday morning, I looked out over Medicine Lake, smooth as silk, without a ripple anywhere.  The skies were clear and only a faint bit of smoke remained on the eastern horizon.  Our days of doing nothing were about to begin with a meandering 3.5 mile loop around the perimeter of the lake. Our campground site is at the upper mid right of the map above, the swimming beach is the far right marker, the best fishing hole is on the lower left on the lake and the Brownell Cabin in on the lower bottom left on the shore.  The good bike trail goes to Little Medicine Lake on the upper left shore.  Somehow slipping into a kayak in the early morning feels like nothing at all, no effort, just a silky glide across w ...Read more...

I’m fine, no lasting injuries or anything, but it was not a fun experience. Imagine, working from home, as I do, making it through the first cup of coffee, a few meetings, breakfast, and a break, and finally deciding to take a shower and get dressed. By now, my workday is usually half-over, and the neighborhood is extremely quiet. The dogs are beginning their twelfth nap of the day, and the hot water heater has had plenty of hours to refill. I set my status to “Away” on instant messenger, double-check that the blinds are closed and the webcam is off, and enter the bathroom. Remember that we live in a 25′ Travel Trailer, so the bathroom is… small. I take a step in, rotate to close the door (we installed a hook- ...Read more...

Peel Outta Here - Tips For Visiting Yellowstone National Park

From the site: Peel Outta Here - Tips For Visiting Yellowstone National Park

If you have never been blessed with a trip to Yellowstone National Park, you may be wondering a few things. What are the best things to see? Where should we go first? How long do I need to see the whole park? Do you really see that many animals? Where should we stay? These are just a few questions we have been asked and answering is not as easy as one might think. I will start with number 5. Where you will want to stay will ultimately depend on the experience you want and what your requirements are. We enjoy being inside the park and are set up to dry camp for a few weeks at a time. Waking up to the sound of elks calling out to their calves is something you won’t forget anytime soon. From the site: Mali Mish - Day 5: Lassen Volcanic National Park.

Last night we spent another night boondocking at Walmart. So far on this trip, we have not had hookups. At the speed that we are moving and the places we plan to be visiting, hookups do not look like they will be in our future. That is ok since so far we have sunny skies and mild weather. That will keep us boondocking for many nights to come. We decided that today rather than driving straight up I-5 we were taking a detour to visit our first National Park of this trip. Lassen Volcanic National Park was just about an hour away and we hung a right on the road and headed up. Our National Park Pass was purchased in August of 2012. That means by the end of the month it will expire. This is probably the best $80 we have ever spent. After stop ...Read more...

From the site: Ray and Cindy's RV Travels - Blaine, Washington August 19, 2013

Some reflections on our Alaska trip. When we left Utah the first of May, we had fairly good weather, And except for a very few days of overnight showers, we couldn't have asked for better weather. We did get rained on a few times as we traveled, but in Alaska they were reporting record highs for the summer. I guess the weather knew we were coming and wanted to make the journey as pleasant as possible. We traveled about 10,000 miles, which cost almost $4,000.00 dollars for fuel. We did do a lot of driving without the 5er which saved on fuel. Cindy had budgeted a lot more for campgrounds than we actually spent. We did boon-dock a lot, but the sun co-operated enough that our solar did very well. We probably didn't have to run our generator more ...Read more...

Three years ago, we were taking one of our long road trips and started discussing the possibility of getting a camper.  We were tired of sleeping in rooms & beds that weren’t ours.  We were also tired of having to eat out so much while traveling as well as being limited on our choices of where to stay.  Our destinations must be dog friendly since we always take Emma & Rowan with us.  They also must be vegan friendly, which can be quite the challenge in several areas of the country. After considering everything from a smaller motorhome to VW vans and teardrop trailers, we settled on getting an Airstream.  They were love at first sight for us and while looking at all the options out there, we kept comi ...Read more...

Yesterday we spent a couple of hours sitting outside in the shade in a deserted RV park.  The park is completely full of RVs and tents but the people were all gone.  Why?  They are here to attend a huge country music festival with big name performers like Darius Rucker, Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley and The Eli Young Band.  No, we did not attend as the tickets were sold out months ago.   Friday afternoon they started to arrive in droves.  Most of our fellow campers are late teen and early 20-somethings.  They generally arrive in cars or SUVs, pour out of the vehicle and tents begin to spring up. By 5 pm nearly all of them were gone leaving their belongings strewn around their sites.Early then next mo ...Read more...

Last weekend we went to buy our new to us camper! This past spring we decided to change our style of camping. The motorhome was great and we had a lot of fun in it, but we decided we needed to go a little bigger so all of the family would fit easier. We decided we wanted to go with a camper instead of a motorhome. A 5th wheel camper will be great because we can pull doubles (atv trailer or boat) and the amount of space that is added both inside and outside would be wonderful. It's going to be AWESOME! Vaya Con Perros - How’s Savannah?

From the site: Vaya Con Perros - How’s Savannah?

The number one question we’ve been asked lately is, “How’s Savannah?” This is, of course, a valid question. It’s been six months since we packed up our lives in Seattle and moved across the country (after having packed up our lives to roam around the country in an RV). We really couldn’t have gone much further geographically or culturally and stayed within the continental United States so it’s only natural that inquiring minds want to know: How’s Savannah? Well, Savannah is…a lot of things. Too many things, in fact, to talk about in one blog post. But we’ll get started here with a quick overview of what we’ve seen so far of Savannah and the surrounding area. Savannah i ...Read more...

After being on the road pretty much continuously for the last couple of weeks, it was nice to have a quiet morning of just coffee and not much else. For the last 5 years we’ve always stayed at Galveston Bay RV Park down near Dickinson. It’s hard to give up views like this out our windshield, but since Brandi and her family have moved out to the Katy area west of Houston, we talked about finding someplace more central, kind of half way between our son, Chris, and his family, and Brandi and hers.
