Travels of John and Bridget - Red Rock Canyon

From the site: Travels of John and Bridget - Red Rock Canyon

The weather was just too beautiful to waste today so we packed a picnic lunch and took a drive through Red Rock Canyon.  The scenery was beautiful.  Didn’t see any wildlife…just lots of people taking pictures just like us. LOL Later tonight we attended the dirt track races at Pahrump Valley Speedway.  It was loud and dirty with lots of crashes.  We had a great time. Laugh everyday.  Happy trails.  Stay safe. ...Read more...

We left South Carolina with our hearts on full and headed toward Indy, but not before we made a couple of stops along the way.  The first leg of the return trip started at the end of a work day so we couldn’t move far and found ourselves in Asheville, NC at a Passport America campground called Wilson’s Riverfront RV Park.  Small park but the nicest overnight stay we’ve had in a very long time…and only at $13.50!!! From the site: Life In An RV | FTRVing.com - Fulltimer Talks About RV Lighting – L.E.D. vs. Incandescent – what’s the big deal?

Do you find your coach or trailer batteries running out of juice quickly and all you had on was your 12 volt lights? Have you changed over to L.E.D. lights yet? Well, maybe it’s time you did! (and here’s why). Did you know that the small incandescent light bulbs in your RV suck up a whole bunch of juice (current or electricity) from your batteries? OK, maybe I’m putting the cart before the horse. What on earth are incandescent bulbs you ask? They’re the little glass light bulbs that looks similar to a car or truck tail light. Incandescent lights all have a filament in them. You know the light bulbs in your house that you always shake to see if the little wires in them have broken…those are also incandescent l ...Read more...

Man In The Maze - A sticky subject among Airstreamers

From the site: Man In The Maze - A sticky subject among Airstreamers

In the Airstream universe you will find a curious phenomenon: passionate debates about caulk.  That’s because the constant movement of all parts on the road causes all travel trailers to leak eventually, and a good caulk is our first line of defense against rain penetration.  Rather unfairly, Airstreamers get more of this debate than owners of other brands, mostly because Airstreams have been around for so long, and so many of them remain on the roads after decades of use. An Airstream might easily be re-caulked a dozen times over its lifetime.  In contrast, “disposable” cheap travel trailers tend to get chucked into a landfill when they start to leak because they’re starting to fall apart too. You don ...Read more...

About a month and a half ago, there was a gentleman at one of the nearby corners selling traditional Mexican tables and chairs. You know the ones that you see in the Mexican restaurants all the time. So cool. Well, I got this bright idea, after seeing one of the "little kid chairs", that Gus HAD to have one. Of course, he even did monogramming on them....PERFECT!!! I could hardly wait to see it. This full time RV living is an amazing adventure.  We are well into the 7th month and everyday seems just a bit better than the day before.  If it continues like this I may become concerned that it is not legal to be having this much fun!! We seem to be hitting a stride.  Out ‘here’ you really need to plan ahead, when you start this adventure, that can be somewhat intimidating.  Thoughts of what do we do if we can’t find a place to park, etc. kind of linger in the back of your mind.  So to avoid those problems, we plan ahead, stay flexible and adjust as we go.  We use the internet and other resources like Workamper News extensively.  There are tons of resources for finding places to camp ...Read more...

Oh... wait, we are in Washington, PA. I forgot! Whew... Another 325 miles on the odometer today.... started off fine in the sun, and ended up real wet and cold. Is it spring yet? I might be still thinking I am in Florida. There goes our Gulf Stream Endura, climbing up a mountain again... we had 4 or 5 good climbs today through the Blue Ridge Mountains, keeps our Duramax Diesel working! We have tied up at the Washington KOA tonight... there are not a lot of campgrounds in this area to start, and some are not open yet. We have stayed at this one numerous times in the past. RV Crazy? - Biking and Hiking in Big Basin State Park

From the site: RV Crazy? - Biking and Hiking in Big Basin State Park

As usual, we brought our trusty bikes camping with us. I just can't say enough about how much fun we have biking on our trips. I have to add now that I had no idea how much we'd use the bikes on trips. The first time I saw my hubs putting the bike rack on the rv, and getting all of our bikes configured, I thought it would be a big pain in the neck. I didn't know if bringing the bikes would be worth it all. I've never been so glad to have been SO wrong! These babies have brought us hours and hours of fun and allowed us to explore much more than if we were to simply walk everywhere. We often bike to the trailheads, saving our little kids' energy for the hikes. Our trusty "steeds" all parked and ready to explore Big BasinOur biking setup is alw ...Read more...

I’m a free-flyin’ kinda gal! I have a confession to make. For the past 6 months I have not used any deodorant, at least not the kind you can buy from the store. First, I’m no expert on waxing, polishing, cleaning and maintaining exteriors of RV’s.  Paulette might add I’m no expert on cleaning anything – period!!  However, that aside, a few readers have asked me in recent days what I use to clean our 5’er.  That’s probably because I posted a blog a few days ago about washing our rig and mentioning that my next job was going to be a complete wax. There are a bewildering number of cleaning products available In the past, I’ve usually just gone to a store like Canadian Tire and looked at all the hundreds of different types of cleaners and waxes made by Mother, Simoniz, Meguire and many others.  RV stores, like Camping World, they had lots ...Read more...

From the site: Uploads by RVgeeks - RV QUICK TIP: Grey Tank & Sensor Cleaning

RV QUICK TIP: Grey Tank & Sensor Cleaning Besides water, an RV grey tank takes in lots of greasy, sticky substances. These include food particles & residue from preparing meals and washing dishes, soap, shampoo, toothpaste & even body oils. After a while, it can gum up your holding tank sensors, causing a false reading on your tank monitors. Cleaning out the grey tank and sensors is a really simple task, since there's a readily available liquid designed to break up all of the crud that can build up in the tank: automatic dishwasher detergent. The gel type is easy to flush down the drain, and goes right to work breaking down and dislodging greasy build-up. To calibrate the holding tank monitors in your RV, follow the steps o ...Read more...

RV Life On Wheels - "We are on the road again..."

From the site: RV Life On Wheels - "We are on the road again..."

Florida got the last kick in today, as rain continued most of the night, and into this morning... however it was still nice and warm, so not so bad. We were on the road at 9:00 after getting ready, dumping tanks etc. so all was good, well for the first 5 miles! We had no sooner settled into our travels along the Hwy. 95 North, when Judy came whizzing by me and motioned me to pull over. Normally we would have used our hand radios, but there are some technical issues there! After I got over, she jumped out and told me I had lost the rear AC Unit cover! Yikes. She said it blew off the top of the RV and landed somewhere way off to the right of the highway, probably in a bunch of pieces. Oh man... always something. We decided to carry ...Read more...

Our Location today is Tecumseh, Ontario. After three and a half months away we knew the day would arrive that we’d have to go home and today was the day. We both slept on and off throughout the night and were wide awake by 7:30. Not even all the fresh air we breathed in yesterday at our happy hour fire helped us to get a decent night’s sleep. What else should we expect for a pretravel night of sleep? This morning we met the couple that parked next to us as we were all getting ready to head for home. Their names were John and Marilyn Theil from Stratford. The short-term workamping situation was not working out quite as we had expected, so we made the decision to leave that RV Park and continue our travels west.  We weren’t quite done exploring the Hill Country, though, so we didn’t want to move too far. We found the Junction North Llano River RV Park, about 80 miles away, and made that our destination.  We packed up this morning and made our departure without incident.  It was an easy drive west on I-10 and we arrived in Junction by 11:30.  The RV Park was easy to find, and we got checked in and set up on site #46. Our site is a nice long, level pull-thru with a covered patio.  When we left Boerne this morning, it was cool and overcast, but by the time ...Read more...

Our RV Adventures - Moving Day . . . Again

From the site: Our RV Adventures - Moving Day . . . Again

Today was once again moving day. We had to move back one space to the left. A real pain in the butt, but it means we go from paying $20 a night to paying $3 a night for the next 10 days. Since it was supposed to be 90 today, we decided to move a little earlier than we did last Sunday, so about 12:45 we hit the road, or at least drove across the road and then backed into the site next door. It took several back and forths to get in straight because the site doesn’t have a lot of room between the pad and the sewer connection.  As it was, when the rig was right along side the patio, the sewer connection was only about 6 inches from my rear tire on the other side. But it fit, which is what mattered. So we’re now parked until ...Read more...

I bet you are thinking, “Wow!  This should be exciting.  I love to hear about the Amish.  I didn’t know they were heading to Pennsylvania.”  Well, this is not about the Amish – in Pennsylvania or otherwise – and it isn’t really about a barn raising either, but when we got to Phoenix, AZ to visit Jen’s family, it sure felt like it. Let me explain.  We drove in from El Paso.  It was a longer drive for one day than we had intended, but we made good time.  Jen’s mom came out to greet us before we even knocked on the door.  We heard, “My girls are here!”  It felt like we were home again.  We caught up a bit, and Jen’s sister Diane ...Read more...

We rolled in to Mendoza like we had almost every other big city on the trip, in need of a few auto parts and maintenance; in particular a new car battery.  The past couple weeks of traveling with Home on the Highway, who was also (and still is) in dire need of a new car battery had been an amusing parade of trading jumps.  It was only by pure luck that not both of our batteries died in the middle of the desert.  Rolling in to Mendoza on a Thursday right before a big holiday weekend was not the best plan.  We spent two nights at a campground outside of town, just enough time to find out everything was closing until the following Tuesday. From the site: WatsonsWander - Exploring and working fulltime from our Airstream - Arches, Balancing Rocks and a Trip Down Park Avenue

Last week, before another three day stretch of crappy weather arrived, we hit the trail to explore more of Arches National Park. Most of the trails in the park are fairly short, which makes it easy to fit more than one hike into a single day. The short hikes also mean that we have plenty of time to be productive around the ‘house’ before or after a visit to the park. Despite the finicky weather, we have managed to hike most of the trails in the park. The two exceptions are the Fiery Furnace, which is a ranger led hike, and the Towers Arch, which is in the back country area of the park. We might skip the Fiery furnace this time around, but the Towers Arch is definitely in our plans for this week or next. Last Sunday we took a lat ...Read more...
