RV Wheel Life - Carlsbad Caverns’ free 2014 Night Sky Parties

From the site: RV Wheel Life - Carlsbad Caverns’ free 2014 Night Sky Parties

Free Night Sky events have returned this summer to the Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico. “The park is a perfect spot for viewing the wonders of the night sky due to its location miles away from the lights of the local communities.” Because the rangers are asking that people arrive before dark (bright headlights impair night vision), why not get there earlier in the day and take a tour of this fantastic, cool [56°F (13°C) average temperature] natural wonder. Summer extended hours: May 23 – Sept. 1, 2014 Last Cavern Entry: - Via Natural Entrance: 3:30 p.m. - Via elevator: 5 p.m. Visitor Center Open: 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. 2014 Star Party dates — June 21, July 19, Aug, 23, Sept. 20, Oct ...Read more...

Aluminarium - 6 Year Anniversary

From the site: Aluminarium - 6 Year Anniversary

This year we’re spending our wedding anniversary at Emigrant Lake in Ashland Oregon. I booked the coveted site #21 in August of last year, knowing that we’d be back in the area for a family reunion over Memorial Weekend. Site #21 has the biggest “front yard” and a fantastic view of the lake. The site is so big, Brian had to go out and buy a longer fresh water hose. The traditional gift for a 6 year Wedding Anniversary is iron. Not sure what that would translate into. A cast iron skillet or a wrought iron fence? Iron vitamins? Any ideas? 2014 Cost of Camping: $248 for the week thru Monday 5/26 53 night paid camping 92 nights free camping 145 days this year Total spent on camping this year: $1610 Daily average ...Read more...

We decided to stay another night at South Fork Campground and after a lunch of the leftover ribs and bidding Heinz and Angela goodbye, we took Rich and Terri up to see Beaver Creek Reservoir. I know many of my blog readers have camped with us in South Fork through the years, so am familiar with Beaver Creek Reservoir.  As you know they found a leak in the earthen dam up there a few years ago and this year they started the repairs….looks like they are going to create a whole new dam behind this one and take the current one down.  There is only a trickle amount of water left in the bottom of the reservoir except at the base of the dam where it is pooled up.  The reservoir sure is a lot deeper than any of us realized.&nbs ...Read more...

This morning we left South Dakota at 8:45am. We headed toward Wyoming. The first 30 minutes was very rough road 16A, they were rebuilding it and there was loose gravel. We had to travel very slow about 10mph. The rest of the trip was uneventful and we arrived at Peter D’s RV Park in Wyoming (a new state for us) about 1:00PM. Some pictures taken on the way. It was beautiful scenery. We saw a few buffalo, cows and antelope. We got set up and went to Walmart to do some shopping. Then we decided to go to dinner at Rib and Chop House as recommended by D, the owner.  We all ordered ribs and they were very good. From the site: How I Wrecked My Life | How I Wrecked My Life - What it is like to drive a Class A RV

When you meet non RVers, one of the more popular questions is “That motorhome is huge, is it hard to drive?” This question is not near as frequent as “What kind of milage does your rig get?”, but the idea of a class A being hard to drive is definitely a popular question. Driving a class A motorhome will put some fear in you the first few times.  Motorhomes can be more than 8 feet wide, and when you sit in the drivers seat for the first time, the size will be intimidating. I remember when we first bought the RV.  After the orientation the technician said that we should drive it over to get some gas.  He sat down in the passenger seat and motioned for me to sit in the drivers seat. I hesitated for a bit ...Read more...

A mixture of sun & cloud this morning but enough sun to get little Bugsy & I into the Jeep & out into the countryside for a nice Sunday morning drive.  Air was a bit cool but no wind so we were able to get out & do a bit of exploring around at a few of our favorite places.  A stop in Goderich on our way home netted me a tote bin for the rig, some paint for a little project & a few 'quick connect' pieces for hooking up a garden hose to the rig.  I always seem to have problems threading a garden hose onto water faucets so that quick connect stuff makes it much easier & keeps my short patience fuse from launching me into orbit. We’ve been to Taos, New Mexico a number of times and it seems we’re always finding new adventures around the area…some good and others not so good! Friday 5/16 was another beautiful day. The sun was shining and the temps reached the low 80’s with no or very little wind. A perfect day for a train ride from Williams to the Grand Canyon. South Llano River State Park is a beautiful state park along the South Llano River.  It is located about 5 miles south of town and Interstate 10 so we figured this would be the quiet place I was looking for …  We discovered it was going to be quieter than we thought as we found we could get absolutely no Verizon internet service here and a total of zero (yes that is ZERO) over the air TV channels. OUR NEWELL ADVENTURE - Da'aw

From the site: OUR NEWELL ADVENTURE - Da'aw

Tahoe, or "Da'aw"....Washoe Indian for "Lake"I love the simplicity of the names given to places and things by the various Native American tribes throughout the west.  You will remember from yesterday that Washoe means "people from here".  Well, today I found that Tahoe is also from the Washoe word "Da'aw" meaning "Lake".  It sounds much more exotic when you say "Tahoe" than "Lake".  Of course, then the next thing you think of is that the official designation of this lake as "Lake Tahoe" is a little repetitive, huh?The lake is 1,645' deep making it the second deepest lake in North America, second only to Crater Lake in Oregon....1,949' deep.  It has 72 miles of shoreline, and covers 192 square miles.  There are ...Read more...

The campground just opened for the season the night before so it was completely empty. From the site: Metamorphosis Road - Crossing Nevada Part II: It Feels Like an Ocean

As we head West out of Ely on the Loneliest Road, the map tells us we will be crossing a land of undulating valleys and mountains. This is high desert country; the valleys lie at about 6,000 feet and the mountains top out over 11,000 feet. Towns are few and far between, each about 70 miles distant. In reality it feels as though we are crossing an ocean. Each valley is a huge expanse of sage-green, long and wide, slowing rising to a mountain pass topped by frothy snow capped mountain "waves". At each crest we can see our tiny ribbon of highway flowing through the next green valley and climbing the next wave of mountains. We search for signs of life as we drive, seeing few cattle and sheep, one lone pronghorn. Water sources are well hidden here ...Read more...

They just recently opened up the road to Big Meadows and he wanted to get some of those winter-cold trout up there. I sat outside under the trees at the park and knitted with Poncho laying beside me. I put on the Sincerely Sinatra radio station on the Sirius satellite radio and I was in seventh heaven…it was a tranquil scene to be sure. How to: Clean the Interior of your RV By: Rick Kessler Each spring, before the first camping trip, I clean the camper like I’m Felix Unger on steroids. It’s amazing how dirty the rv gets when it’s been sitting unused for at least half a year. It’s during this cleaning that I get a more thorough inspection of any repairs that might be needed. Before we go any further, let’s not assume we all have the same standards of clean. I’m reminded of this every time I pass by my children’s bedrooms. And every time I see someone not wearing gloves at the dump station. That being said, I can reasonably assure you that my idea of clean would fall well within the accepted standards.
