a life made simple - CHRISTMAS AT EL MANGLAR

From the site: a life made simple - CHRISTMAS AT EL MANGLAR

Christmas at El Manglar - in the RAIN - at El Manglar. If you can believe. Today was back to a blue sky and our normal hot temperatures - a relief after almost two straight days of rain. I'm surprised to hear myself say that the hot sun was a relief!!! But it was getting so wet and sloppy around here. Apparently, rain is very very unusual for Zihuatanejo in December. Of course! Where we are, rain seems to follow - doesn't it?!Anyway, we worked around it. Or rather walked quickly from point A to B.Much of Christmas Eve day was low key. Cas played the day away with her friends which gave Derek and I a chance to sneak out to buy her a Christmas gift from the temptation store (the beach shop down the way.)By 4:30pm I was preparing a caesar salad ...Read more...

Weaselmouth - Skidaway Island State Park, Savannah, GA

From the site: Weaselmouth - Skidaway Island State Park, Savannah, GA

With a full two weeks off for the holidays, we wanted to make a good sweep of some southern spots as an introduction to our new coast. Plotting out a plan from Raleigh to Somewhere-in-Florida started with a stop in Savannah — a place I’ve wanted to visit for a long time after hearing about it from Deke, who’d been there several times. We remembered Laura and Kevin going to Skidaway Island State Park a while back and liking it, and luckily they had a few spots left. Even in December, it’s a beautiful park. The park is 15 miles or so from Savannah, but worth it — we were in spot #51 which was a corner, really private and within short walking distance to the Big Ferry Trail. Site #51. The trail is about 2 miles an ...Read more...

December 24, 2014Oscar Scherer State ParkOsprey, Florida   Since it’s so warm, we leave the door open for Santa and he sneaks in and leaves beautiful packages for us to have fun opening.         We hung the stockings right on the door so Santa couldn’t miss them and when we come out in the morning we see that he has filled them up.   We begin our morning looking in to see what goodies there are.  Lots of dried fruits instead of candies this year.  Nice Santa.  He brought David a quick change valve for doing oil changes.  He seemed really excited about this.  I got a zester which I’m going to love.  Carrie got a non stick spatula which can take up to 600 deg ...Read more...

From the site: Views From The Open Road - Merry Christmas from Santa Rosa Beach, Florida

Bill and I love spending Christmas at the beach.  We are staying at Topsail Hill State Preserve State Park.  For years, I've read comments by people raving on this park.  Now we see why:  it's a beautiful park, just a short bike ride from the beach, large sites with full hook-ups, including cable. We also enjoy attending a Christmas Eve service at a local church, and last night we attended Destiny Worship Center, just down the road in Miramar Beach, FL.  The church was full, with more than  1,200 people.  It was a candlelight service which was amazing with so many people, and we all left with a great reminder of what Christmas is all about. For our Christmas Eve dinner, I made Bill's favorite…seafood ...Read more...

Location: Adairsville, GA (High 51, Low 31) Happy Christmas morning everyone! We have already had a very nice Christmas gift with two solid days of relaxation. On Christmas Eve we often get some kind of take-out. But with the past season, and last month especially, of eating take-out so much, neither Harry nor I felt like eating it again yesterday. Instead we decided to shake it up and make a nice Christmas Eve dinner. It’s been a long, long time since we cooked a ham so that really sounded like a good idea for a delicious meal. We pulled out the Nesco Roast-Air Oven that we bought for just such occasions, but have only used a couple times since we got it.     Harry basted the ham with honey as it was cooking and did ...Read more...

I know, a little trite, but so true.   After almost 3 years on the road it feels so good to come home, if even for a short time.  We left Ventura about 9:15 am and were checking into our site at Rancho Jurupa Regional Park about 3 hours later.  The drive south  involved traffic, more traffic, and way too much traffic.  There is no way to avoid it......traffic is the nature of Southern California.  None the less, we arrived without any issues except a little more stress than we would have wished for ourselves.Contrary to our normal practice we made reservations for our three stay, which will get us to the day after Christmas when we will move to our daughter's property on the east side of Riverside where we will ...Read more...

Monday-Wednesday was learning the tricks and solving the problems with the iPad.  We met the two different ranch owners on this property…friendly and nice. Location: Adairsville, GA (High 62, Low 38) After four months of sticking to a work schedule, it’s been nice over the past couple of days to have NO schedule at all. Yesterday we spent the day just hanging around for the most part. Interspersed with getting a little laundry done and making a pot of spaghetti sauce. The weather was very dreary, and by midday the rain was moving in, so that didn’t lend itself to any outdoor activities. I have so been looking forward to getting back to our running, but so far the weather has not cooperated. I admire those northern runners who get out there in cold snowy and rainy conditions. This state park surrounds its namesake, Picacho Peak, a summit that rises 3,374' above sea level. It can be seen from Tucson that is about 45 miles to the south along I-10.  It has been a beacon rising from the desert for travelers since the Native American Hohokam, the Juan Bautista de Anzo trail (1775), pioneers, the overland stage and mail services, the transcontinental railroad, Civil War troops, and others. Our first stop, as always, was the Visitor Center where we picked up information on the park and hiking trails. There is a small gift shop there as well.We hiked the Calloway Trail (1.4 mi. roundtrip) that leads to an overlook; the Nature Trail (1 mi.); and the short Children's Cave Trail (.4 mi.).  The Hunter Trail (4 mi) ...Read more...

I really like Rockhound State Park, and had a wonderful time last time I was here. This time, circumstances were just a little off, so I moved on quickly to Pancho Villa State Park. We drove through some rain, mist and a skiff of snow through Michigan and Ohio. We got as far as Lexington, Kentucky by 1:00 am Friday and pulled into a Walmart parking lot. It was only 27' F. So damn cold. We climbed into the trailer and got a few hours sleep. On the road again in the morning by 7:00 am. Our first night of being homeless and we had to sleep in a Walmart parking lot!!!
