Sam&Donna-5th Wheel Vagabonds - Saturday Mumblings.

From the site: Sam&Donna-5th Wheel Vagabonds - Saturday Mumblings.

Was up early for my coffee, Donna slept in late since she worked last night at the restaurant, and has the day shift today. The weather has cooled some  and is gorgeous, sunny and in the mid 70’s. Last night it went down into the 50’s which was some sort of a record overnight low.Rigg’s notices my plate is clean after breakfast. It is really making me think about us getting the wheels turning again if maybe just for a short vacation type trip just to get away from the house for a little while. I wanted to go to Pa. for a high school get together on Aug 17th, but Donna is still not feeling up to a 900 mile trip. Not much going on here , Rigg’s and I are holding down the Ranch, he is enjoying the cooler temps and is ...Read more...

From the site: Gypsy Journal RV Travel Newspaper - Slow Day At The RV Park

We’ve been on the go a lot playing tourist the last few days, so yesterday we decided to stay home and relax. I got a lot of writing done, Terry mastered a couple of knitting stitches, and in spite of a terrible internet connection I managed to answer a bunch of e-mails. One was from a Gypsy Journal reader who has been telling me about a legal issue he’s dealing with. He wrote few months ago that he had been in an accident when somebody in a minivan pulled right out in front of him from a parking lot and he couldn’t stop in time to avoid a collision. Even though the other driver was cited in the accident, the RVer is now being sued by the other party, whose attorney is claiming that there was shared liability because the ...Read more...

Our RV Adventures - Bridges and Parades . . .

From the site: Our RV Adventures - Bridges and Parades . . .

Lucky for us the predicted all-night rain didn’t show up, so the grass under our rig had a chance to dry. And when it came time to back out of our site a little after 9am, we got out OK. Before we left the Soo, we wanted to get some diesel, but taking the most direct way to the Interstate and our station took us up a steep hill with a traffic light at the bottom. If I could be sure that I could take the hill without stopping at the light, it wouldn’t be a problem. But if I got a red light it would be slow going up the hill, doable, but slow. Maybe that’s why the signs say ‘No Vehicles Over 5 Tons’. Could be. So I had mapped out a new route that looked like it would work, and it did. The hill along that way was ...Read more...

From the site: Travels of John and Bridget - Trip to Bibler Home and Gardens.

Today Aunt Eloise treated us to a tour of Bibler Home and Gardens.  What a magnificent place it is . Bibler Gardens is a private display garden in Kalispell, Montana designed by Sam Bibler.  He landscaped, planted and maintained the gardens at his home from around 1980 until his death in 2002.  While touring the property we saw gardens, ponds, waterfalls, sculptures as well as a log stable with animals.  It is truly a sight to see.  If you would like to read more about Bibler Home and Gardens here is the link:  http://www.biblergardens.org/Bibler Gardens was so beautiful it was hard to chose what pictures to post. Turn When the Road Does - A decision is made, a plan is in motion. The finale and part three is next.

From the site: Turn When the Road Does - A decision is made, a plan is in motion. The finale and part three is next.

Rhonda made it back last night.  Our day (Monday) was spent getting the mail, meeting with our contact at the USDA National Park Office, driving to the site and ultimately making a final decision.  So here goes with the short story. When I arrived last week here in the Dead Horse State Park, I drove to Palatki to check out the road going into the site.  It was rough and I had just had the destruction back in Winslow from going into Homolovi.  I must have been tired and hypersensitive to the road conditions although there is no doubt about it, parts of the road are horrendous. So we met with Angela and the proposition was for us to stay at another site and drive a forest service vehicle to Palatki, about an hour one way ...Read more...

And, boy, is it ever!  Yellowstone is full, folks.  If you're coming, you really should have a reservation.  Everyday we turn folks away who actually seemed surprised that we're full...not just Canyon Campground but the entire park, including all hotels, lodges, cabins, and yes, campgrounds. And in the midst of July's craziness, we lost a couple at Canyon, but it is not all bad.  Rich, one of our Senior GSAs, was promoted to Office Manager at Fishing Bridge.  While I hated to lose him and Ronda, I am proud that he's moving on up.  This is Rich's 5th year in the park, and I've worked with him four of those years.  I feel like a proud mom, sending her child out into the world. So, since we lost a couple, we ar ...Read more...

From the site: Uploads by RVgeeks - RV TRIP TIP: Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

RV TRIP TIP: Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone Mention Yellowstone National Park, and most people probably think of Old Faithful. While we love the geyser basins, our favorite part of the park might be just a little less famous: the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. This spectacular canyon and its two powerful waterfalls seem more accessible to us than the more well-known "Grand Canyon" of Arizona fame. You can easily drive all along the rim to various overlooks, and quickly hike down into it on Uncle Tom's Trail, which descends steel a steel stairway directly across from the Lower Falls (the larger of the two). The hike up is a bit more challenging, so don't head down unless you're in good shape. There are lots of campgrounds in Yellowst ...Read more...

We woke to more gray skies,   BUT  it wasn’t raining:o)) Earlier this week, when we hiked at Boot Cove Preserve, we met the only other hiker there.   She was from Maine and hikes this area often.   One of her favorite places to hike is in Cutler, just down the road. (click on any photo to enlarge)   She told us there are several different hikes from 3 to 10 miles long.  As long as the rain stays away, we decided to hike the Black Point Brook Loop!! So we packed a lunch and headed south to Rt 191 towards Cutler. Yea, it was a bit foggy…. Sunday July 21, 2013Site 370 Narrows Too  CampgroundTrenton, Maine   I blame it on Bill and Nancy.   It was their idea to hike one of the historic paths to Bar Harbor.  They asked if we’d like to hike from Sieur de Monts to Bar Harbor in time to have ice cream for lunch and then hike back.  About 5 miles. Our colds aren’t gone but I’m pretty sick of my cold running my life so I said you bet.  Hike for ice cream, right up my alley.  Not too far, not up a mountain.  I can do this even with the cough as long as they can stand to listen to me hacking.   They of course are gracious.   David is not a great ice cream fan but he’s up for the walk.     ...Read more...

Over the years I’ve gotten a lot of queries from people who want to understand RV’ing, or Airstreams specifically.  I’ve noticed that commonly I’ll get questions that really have no single answer, like “What tow vehicle should I buy?”, “What’s the best length of Airstream?”, “Where are the best places to go?” or “What budget should I have for full-timing?” Lately these questions have been increasing in frequency, probably because the rate of people entering the Airstream community has taken a sudden jump this year.  Lots of Baby Boomers are buying Airstreams (half of them buying Airstream as the first RV of any type they’ve owned, according to Airs ...Read more...

As previously reported, we haven’t left Lake City once since we got here in Mid-May. Shopping locally for food has been relatively easy but acquiring some of our other favorite treats and commonly consumed household items has been more challenging. For example, we learned that liquid products shipped here from sea level may not survive the increase in altitude (we are at about 8,300′ above sea level). This box that once held RV toilet holding tank chemicals is a good example. I ordered our favorite Camco TST RV Holding Tank Chemical from Amazon. Unfortunately, the seal on this container didn’t survive the rise in atmospheric pressure and burst while the box was in transit. The women who run the Lake City post office were ...Read more...

LongLongHoneymoon.com | Videos, tips & information for travelers. - REVIEW: CorrosionX

From the site: LongLongHoneymoon.com | Videos, tips & information for travelers. - REVIEW: CorrosionX

Recently we’ve been discussing our favorite anti-corrosion products for use with an RV. In addition to Boeshield T-9, we sometimes use a product called CorrosionX. CorrosionX was developed by a company in Dallas, Texas, for use by the military on metal gear from tools to tanks to guns. CorrosionX claims to be the only product available to the public that meets the US Navy’s tough corrosion prevention requirement. Unlike ordinary oils and greases, molecules of CorrosionX stick to metal almost like a magnet. CorrosionX actually kills existing rust and corrosion (keeping it from spreading) and provides long-term protection on any metal surface. Do you carry guns in your RV? Swab a dirty gun bore with CorrosionX , and the product w ...Read more...

Roger here...  The day after the hike to Hurricane Ridge, we continued in the tourist mode for an all-day excursion to Forks and the Hoh Rain Forest.  This time all four of us went.  We assured Kaia that any hiking we might do would be on flat surfaces, and we bribed her with a promise to check out Forks --- Forks, Washington --- a small lumber town.  What would be so special about that for a 14-year-old?Well.....  It was the setting for Stephenie Meyer's Twilight novels.  The books are about vampires, werewolves and teen angst.  The picture above was taken at the Forks, Washington Visitor Center, where we promised to take Kaia to see the Twilight sites.  Kaia is the healthy-looking one with ...Read more...

Just North of Ward Colorado is Beaver Reservoir, accessible by a well graded dirt road (turn off Hwy 7 at sign for Boy Scout Camp, County Rd 96). Roughly 1.5 miles down the dirt road is the National Forest Boundary, which extends all the way to the reservoir (but not around it). This gives about a 1 mile stretch of dirt road in which boondocking is allowed and where I stayed the night. I was surprised how many other people were out here on a Sunday night, with more than half of the established camping ‘spots’ being occupied. We were up at 5am, and packed our cooler with our lunch, and plenty of water.  The campground was peaceful and quiet as we left, and the sun was just coming up. We did disturb a few white pelicans as we drove past the marina . . . but the cattle barely gave us a second glance!
