Owens on the Road - A day to explore new places

From the site: Owens on the Road - A day to explore new places

Coyote Valley RV ParkMorgan Hill, CAWe had a wonderful day today! We went with our friends Greg & Conniefor a ride to do some exploring. The day started out with a hearty breakfast at Scramblz, then Greg did the driving south on highway 101to Pinnacles National Park. Not knowing we were going there, I wore flip-flops,so no hiking this time :-)We visited the small visitor's center at the West entrance, where we watched a film about how the Pinnacles were formed.Spring is the best time to visit, and even though it's technically not spring yet,you sure would think so by the beautiful green colors of the mountains. The Pinnacles themselves are rich with color..From their website:The Pinnacles Rocks are believed to be part of the Neenach Volcano th ...Read more...

a life made simple - WATCHING NEVADA GO BY

From the site: a life made simple - WATCHING NEVADA GO BY

Friday, was the day to drive through the rest of eastern Nevada. Although we only had around 360 miles to do it took us about 7 hours. It's a slow climb for us. Many parts are flat but the gradual climbs really slowed us down. That gave us lots of time to watch Nevada go by. We always travel without music, it's only been Nevada in the past that has broken us down to find something to listen too. It's a great route though. We call it the Idaho Express because of the predominately Idaho license plates that we drive by. If you are headed north its a good alternative to the I15 through Salt Lake City.Pulling out of Pahranagat we stopped in Alamo for gas. To take this route you really need to be on your gas levels. Between Alamo/Ash Spr ...Read more...

Rob and Me in our Little RV - Rockin' and Rollin' in the Little RV

From the site: Rob and Me in our Little RV - Rockin' and Rollin' in the Little RV

This morning we decided to get out of Texas so we packed up, chipped the ice off of everything and were on our way. None of the hoses or cables would cooperate because everything was frozen and stiff as could be.  I basically stuffed it all into the basement and shut the door knowing when we got to our next location it would be thawed out and more flexible. That's not snow it's all ice.As we drove about the first 100 miles today the weather was in the low 20s and very foggy. There was a lot of ice on the bushes along the road. We were only a few miles from Mexico and this is not what I was expecting. The fog eventually burned off and the sun came out. We gained an hour as we crossed into the Mountain time zone.Casino Camping in New ...Read more...

From the site: Tin TeePee/Log Cabin - Harquahala Mountain National Back Country Byway

Last year the outdoor group at North Ranch made a run up Harquahala Mountain and we went along in the jeep as we had no way to trailer our ATVs at that time.  There were probably 40 people making the trip last year, today there were eight of us—what a difference—a good difference!!  Tom and Sandy were our leaders followed by Geri and Larry.  A new to us couple came along too, Dell and Judy.  The trip to the summit is 10 miles with an elevation gain of 3800 feet!!  The road is rough in spots and very good in other areas.  With all our conferencing talks it took us two hours to reach the summit-- I’m glad I wasn’t riding a mule and although I love to hike an elevation gain of 3360 feet ...Read more...

Oh yeah, exactly what we needed! A little fisheye view We were looking for a change, a big change. After months in the dry desert we were craving high mountains, cool air and the fresh scent of pine trees…and we were willing to travel miles to get it. Around 180 miles to be exact. One of the many beauties of being on wheels, and in southern CA/AZ specifically, is easy access to so many varying natural environments. Our drive from KOFA to San Diego on I-8 was going to take us directly through a large section of east-west mountains known as the Laguna Mountains. This rocky range extends ~1 hour east of San Diego to a max height of around 6,378 feet (1,944 m). It’s not exactly alpine-style, but when you’re coming f ...Read more...

From the site: WatsonsWander - Exploring and working fulltime from our Airstream - Last Week in the Florida Keys

Eight weeks, one driveway, two state parks, one epic snorkeling adventure, four paddling adventures, five Bocce nights, four trips to the flea market, and more bug bites then we could ever count. I think that about sums up our two months in the Keys. Oh…also lots of fresh seafood, amazing sunsets, cute Key Deer, an alligator sighting, meeting up with some great fellow RVers, and hanging with the locals. Am I forgetting anything? How about the turquoise water, the sandy beaches, the palm trees, the flowers, and the tropical foliage everywhere. And of course, spending two months with my dad. If it wasn’t for him we would have never stayed down here so long. He gave us a free place to stay, access to everything people wi ...Read more...

From the site: blog.goodsam.com - Passing On Camping To Kids

Camping with your kids on a regular basis is so important as it radically promotes Passing on Camping to Kids. These camping experiences as children will instill the values of camping in them, which they will hopefully pass on to their future kids. This in turn establishes family traditions, which evoke healthy and jubilant experiences for children to carry on well after you are gone (with their own offspring). It really creates a healthy lifestyle, which propels future times of family togetherness, fostering love and appreciation for one another and also for their natural environment. Sadly, some kids have never been camping once in their lives. Others have been camping, but only with other families and ...Read more...

From the site: Life's Little Adventures - One More Mittry Lake Hike and a Ride on the River

On Saturday Jim, Chris, Suzanne and I took one last hike around Mittry Lake. We wanted to go back to the area where we saw the sheep the previous day, hoping that’s where they hang out. What a nice surprise when thy appeared about fifteen minutes into the hike. Looked like the same family of four. We ended up doing a five mile loop, mostly along ridgelines where we had a nice breeze. Other than the sheep we only saw two women on horseback and an ATV.   We could see the lake and our RVs but getting back to them is always a puzzle out there. Interestingly, that evening at happy hour a ranger stopped to ask us if all of our party was accounted for. Apparently a woman reported seeing four hikers and she was ...Read more...

Location: Avon Park, FL (High 82, Low 62) One of the places in the area that I’ve been looking forward to seeing is Highlands Hammock State Park. We’ve been waiting for a nice warm day so we might have a chance of seeing some wildlife, especially alligators!   Yesterday finally seemed like a good day to go check it out. I packed a lunch and after a leisurely start to the morning, we drove the short distance over to the park. (We are about 15 minutes away.)   Once you drive into the park, there is a main road loop with a number of trails coming off the road. Most of the trails are short loops. We actually had a couple days to explore, visit, and catch up on some office work before leaving Q. We moved from the RV park where we gave our Geek Week, to a private lot where Butch and Fonda Williams were parked. They told us there was one space available, if we could squeeze in. You can't really see it in this picture ... the tight spot was on the other side, we had to get another RV to move back a couple feet before we could fit. With only one day to go of our Quartzsite stay, we just had to go and climb "our" hill. The one that we hiked to most every day when we stayed there back in 2004-5.   I grabbed this picture from Jim's facebook page, cuz it's cool to see the comments too. From the site: Gypsy Journal RV Travel Newspaper - A Tailwind? No Way!

We left the Escapees Dream Catcher RV Park in Deming, New Mexico and experienced that most rare of natural phenomena, a tailwind. Yeah, I know, I thought they were a myth myself, one of those made up things like leprechauns and wood nymphs, and I was so surprised that I almost fell off my unicorn. But there it was, a steady 20 mile per hour tail wind that pushed us west along Interstate 10. And according to my Silverleaf engine monitor, we were getting great fuel mileage! Just about the time we left Lordsburg the highway took a different angle and the wind was hitting us from the side for a while, which made driving a bit of a white knuckle experience. But twenty or so miles later when we crossed into Arizona our route turned slightly agai ...Read more...

Seems like something as small as adding a 12V outlet in the upper tech cabinet so we can charge the JetPack while boondocking without running the inverter would be pretty easy, but after determining that there were no DC wires I could tap into behind the AC outlet or antenna jack that were already up there, I had to pull the fridge. Yeah, I guess for some people it's a two man job, but when @advodna_ann left to take the kids to hang at a friend's house all day and no one else lurking around the KOA on a Monday morning really looked like they wanted to be asked to help, I got the job done by sliding it out onto some bins we use to store Wynne's train tracks and Legos. RV Khronicles of Kevelyn - A Week Later

From the site: RV Khronicles of Kevelyn - A Week Later

A week ago today I sprained my ankle on a hike. So, this past week we’ve been pretty much sitting around at home. One of our fellow hikers sent us a few pictures so we could see what we missed. Here’s a piece of the plane that’s up on the side of the mountain. Apparently, the plane exploded upon impact, so there aren’t big fuselage pieces. And here’s a picture she took of the group at a rest stop. This was just a few minutes before I fell. I’m on the left with the red backpack. I actually wasn’t feeling well at this point. I had begun to feel nauseous. I think I was a bit dehydrated because I drank a bunch of water and felt immediately better. It probably would have been smart to turn back at th ...Read more...

From the site: rvluckyorwhat - Busting the myths of Mardi Gras

By Valerie Coffey We have gone nearly coast to coast in a short time, from Palm Springs, California, on Jan. 29 to Pensacola, FL, on Feb. 14 in time for our first Mardi Gras. We learned a lot. Let’s bust some myths! February 2015: Newly added states NM, TX, LA, MS, and AL make 30 out of 48 for our trip! When we first conceived of this year-long RV trip, we put New Orleans (NOLA) for Mardi Gras on the list. But after talking to experienced visitors and Mardi-Gras attendees, Mitch and I decided we wanted my first visit to New Orleans to be a more authentic native one, not the craziness and (we heard) crushing crowds of Mardi Gras. We wanted to be able to stay together, sit down for a meal at a restaurant or a drink at a bar, and be able ...Read more...
