Our Traveling Tribe - Our current adventure…

From the site: Our Traveling Tribe - Our current adventure…

On Friday, we finished our last leg of the fast trip home. 1450 miles in 2 and a half days – not bad for us.  We never choose to move that far that fast, but we wanted to stay and volunteer in Moore for as long as possible. On the way home, we made lots of stops for all sorts of breaks…We have driven this route so many times that it’s familiar and comforting… Beautiful scenery… ahhh, home turf…     We pulled in late Friday afternoon, and figured that we would head right out to park at one of the firework stands.  We park the 5er at one stand location (the one Dana runs), and Vaughn runs the other one, staying in Greg’s travel ...Read more...

Wish Upon an RV Star! - Blue Hill Caching

From the site: Wish Upon an RV Star! - Blue Hill Caching

Our day off yesterday had a few hours of radiant sunshine, and we decided to take advantage of this by exploring the coastline just west of us in the area of Blue Hill. The Maine coastline has innumerable rocky coves, and the bumpy roads to traverse them :-). This excursion took us off Mount Desert Island north to Ellsworth, then south again along the coastline opposite from the west coast of Acadia.View Larger MapWe find that going on a geocaching hunt lands us in some of the "off the beaten path" areas, so I pored over the geocache map of the area, and plotted a loop course of caches to try and find. It also makes us drive slower so we see more, and we get out of the truck a lot which makes the dogs happy :-)First stop was Union River Bay ...Read more...

The Roadrunner Chronicles - Fredericksburg, TX: National Museum of the Pacific

From the site: The Roadrunner Chronicles - Fredericksburg, TX: National Museum of the Pacific

We did not expect a First Class World War II / Pacific War Museum in the heart of Texas.  But that is exactly what it is:  top notch, very well done, interesting and worth every minute of our time there. I am talking about the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, Texas.  It is also the hometown of World War II Navy Leader and Admiral Chester Nimitz. The museum is really a collection of museums, galleries and displays in a magnificent 6-acre layout.  The H.W. George Bush Gallery houses the majority of the displays inside the main building.  We spent hours there. I was impressed with the concise/comprehensive history displays that began with Asian history leading up to the early 1900's and into th ...Read more...

From the site: On the Road of Retirement - Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada…

We left the Cinderella Motel and Campground later than planned since it was raining  that morning. When the rain let up right after lunch we hit the road to take the RV over to Colton RV in Tonawanda, New York to get a solar panel installed. We pulled into their courtesy site and packed up the car for our four day mini-vacation to Niagara Falls, Ontario. As we arrived at the Rainbow Bridge which crosses over to Canada we had to pay a toll and then we queued up in one of the many Canadian customs lines.  After presenting our passports and answering a few questions about what we were going to do in Canada, what we had in our car,  how long we were staying and whether or not we were bringing guns into the country we were ...Read more...

Our RV Adventures - Going Back To Jackson, Jackson, Jackson . . .

From the site: Our RV Adventures - Going Back To Jackson, Jackson, Jackson . . .

Jan and I left for Jackson, WY about 12 noon, heading over Teton Pass’ 8500 foot summit and 10% grades. But the scenery was great. The 24 mile trip over the mountain saves you about 60 miles from the long way around, taking US26. But it can be a long, slow climb with a lot of hairpin turns and switchbacks. But cresting out at the summit makes up for it. From up here you can look out over the entire valley. Finally coming down off the mountain, we turned north on Moose-Wilson Rd. for the drive up to Moose Junction. And almost immediately Jan let out a squeal, “MOOOSSSEE”. At first all we could see were two females in a pond only about 20 feet off the road. It looked like one of them was trying to chase the other one off ...Read more...

Très Michelle - Upper Yosemite Falls Hike

See the Rainbow?Yosemite Falls is the highest waterfall in the USA and is a beautiful sight if you are lucky enough to be in the park when it’s flowing. The crazy thing about the waterfalls in Yosemite is that they are powered by snow melt! When I see all that water flowing over the falls I wonder where its all coming from because there’s not much snow left. This week Matt and I hiked up to the top of Yosemite Falls. This was the hardest hike we’ve done so far. Round trip this hike is about 7.5 miles. The hard part it that you hike up about 2,000 feet in elevation then have to hike that same amount back down. The hike offered great views of Yosemite Valley and pretty views of Yosemite falls as you climbed up. Once you get ...Read more...

Roads Less Traveled - It’s Not About the Hair!

From the site: Roads Less Traveled - It’s Not About the Hair!

A great new post from Roads Less TraveledLorena gives me a hairstyle called“cola del pato” (tail of the duck) One of our favorite things about traveling is all the little encounters we have that make us stop in our tracks, scratch our heads, and say, “Wow, this is so different than home.”  After living strictly within our own comfort zone for so many years, focused on our workaday lives, we now find ourselves refreshed, over and over, as the folks we meet so far from our backyard show us that there are other ways to live. I’ve been wanting to get a haircut for a while, and as a full-time traveler this is always a great opportunity to have a long conversation with someone from wherever we are visiting.&nbsp ...Read more...

From the site: Riveted - What Happens When We Aren't Home

This post is not about our Airstream, exactly. When we're out traveling in the Airstream for a bit and not at home, our Toyota Camry Hybrid sits parked in our driveway. And by "driveway" I mean "clearing in the forest, surrounded by giant trees and wild plants and vines." It's a beautiful setting, and the forest creatures are plentiful (coyotes, deer, squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons...etc.). While we're away, our Toyota Camry Hybrid (and its cozy air ducts) apparently seem like a nice high-tech condo for small forest creatures. From the site: Uploads by RVgeeks - Replacing an RV Slide Topper — "Standard Method"

Replacing an RV Slide Topper — "Standard Method" Here is the "express" version of this video, showing how to install a new A&E slide topper. Our favorite type of DIY RV project is one that's both surprisingly manageable and also saves a lot of money. Slide topper replacement fits that description to a T by being much easier to accomplish than one might expect, while costing as little as 1/2 to 1/3 the price of having it done at an RV shop. If you thought that replacing your slide toppers was out of your league as a DIY RVer, watch this first and you just might change your mind! Here we demonstrate the "standard" method for replacing a typical A&E slide topper (Carefree of Colorado toppers are different of course). If you ...Read more...

Introduction After spending the winter RVing down south we headed back to Vancouver Island and picked a spot to stay for the summer.  This year we chose Oceanside RV Resort near Victoria BC.  We had stayed here for a week back when we started out as full timers. In fact Oceanside RV was our very first RV Park we visited with the brand new Keystone Cougar Fifth Wheel and the launch of our new fulltime RV lifestyle. I remember how nervous I was about towing the trailer and backing it up, so we made sure to get a nice big pull through spot. Well, what a difference the experience of 2 years traveling and towing makes, this time we have an almost 90 degree back in spot and I tucked the trailer into it on the first shot, smooth as silk. ...Read more...

CR8ING THE LIFE - One Lake One Peak

From the site: CR8ING THE LIFE - One Lake One Peak

I’m convinced that the weather in Yellowstone needs medication. Or at least some intense therapy. The past two days have been sunny and warm with temperatures in the low 70s, while Friday Jerry and I hit heavy rain and snow flurries on our way to Bozeman. Later that same afternoon, we had no sooner unpacked everything and taken Arri for a walk, when the skies opened up and pellets of hail bombarded our campground. Even in my jacket, I was shivering as we hurried home with Arri, shocked that the temperature had dropped enough to see our breath. As we drove to Canyon Saturday morning for a hike with Bill and Cathy, the fog was thick and a thin layer of fresh snow blanketed the sides of the road. I thought to myself, this is not going to ...Read more...

courtesy norwall.comGot a "built in" RV generator? Don't have to "plug and unplug" shore power cords when switching from shore power to the genset? Then you have an ATS (automatic transfer switch). They're convenient, indeed, as the rest of us without them have to go outside, typically open a door, and plug the shore power cord into a special receptacle fed by the genset. However, there are a couple of caveats you need to be aware of: An ATS is not a "perfect" device, and problems can occur. Here's a good rule when firing up the generator when using an ATS. In fact, this is a good rule when firing up any RV generator, ATS or not: Reduce power consumption before firing up the generator. From the site: Quirky Travel Guy - Road trip day 4: Route 66 highlights in Oklahoma

Yee-haw! Before checking out of Oklahoma City for some classic Americana fun on Route 66, I made a point to visit the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. What can you find at the Cowboy Museum? Why, a statue of Abe Lincoln, of course. The museum’s justification for featuring Lincoln is that he was a “western president” who encouraged settlement and development on frontier lands in the west. Ok, I suppose I’ll buy that. Plenty of actual cowboys can be found in the rodeo exhibit, which offers a video with audio commentary narrated by Reba McEntire. Is that country & western enough for ya?
