Gypsy Journal RV Travel Newspaper - Sharks In Seaside

From the site: Gypsy Journal RV Travel Newspaper - Sharks In Seaside

Seaside, Oregon is a nice little town on the Oregon Coast, and the emphasis here is on the beach and the ocean. But when Miss Terry said something about wanting a shark, I started thinking that maybe it was time to take her inland. I saw Jaws and I don’t want anything to do with that critter! But this was an entirely different kind of shark. For the last few years she has been using two different Dyson cordless vacuums. With both units, they seem to pick up okay but battery life has never been dependable and even here in the small confines of the motorhome, they seem to fade in and out before she’s done using them. So she started researching something to replace them with and decided on a Shark Rocket TruePet Ultra-Light Uprigh ...Read more...

From the site: Winds of Destiny - RVLife - National World War I Museum and Memorial, 8/25/2015

Today we visited the National WWI Museum and Memorial. Honestly, I never had heard of this museum until we visited Kansas City. Go to it if you are ever in Kansas City; it is phenomenal!   We began our visit with an introductory video (very well done) that provided the backdrop for the start of WWI including the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. Compulsory military service existed in Germany, France, and Russia even during peacetime. Tensions were escalating between the rich and poor; Catholics and Protestants; socialists, conservatives, and liberals; and ethnic minorities were struggling for their own national identities as the industrial revolution spread across the globe. Europe was the economic center ...Read more...

Aluminarium - Square Dance Center & Campground

From the site: Aluminarium - Square Dance Center & Campground

A few factors drew us to the Square Dance Center & Campground in Lolo, Montana. We could have camped nearby for half the price, but wouldn’t have had hookups and at the time when we made the decision I was worried about the heat and wanted to be able to run the air conditioner for Curtis. We also had friends staying here which sealed the deal. One night after dinner we went to check out the dancing. They did round dancing and square dancing. Round dancing is kind of like ballroom but with someone calling out the moves. I actually got teary eyed watching it because the couples seemed so connected. I found it quite romantic. Today we’re making a move west. We aren’t going to get out of the black today, but we hope to g ...Read more...

From the site: Van-Tramp.com - Wrangell National Park, McCarthy & Kennecott

No way were we going to take the trailer down 60 miles of rutted and washboard dirt road, so instead we found a nice free campground right outside of Chitina to call home base. From here we took the truck into the National Park to visit McCarthy and Kennecott. It turned out to be the right choice as everyone else we knew who drove their trailers down to McCarthy came out with some form of repairs to be made. McCarthy is a tiny town of only 28 inhabitants, resting deep in the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, America’s largest National Park, and my 69th National Park visited. Today it exists primarily as a launching point to see the Kennecott mine – 5 miles up a road inaccessible to the public – or back country activities i ...Read more...

From the site: rvluckyorwhat - What’s the BEST THING We’ve Seen or Done in One Year of Full-Time RVing the US?

By Valerie C. Coffey We left our sticks & bricks home in Massachusetts forever on August 14, 2014, driving away in our brand new Thor Tuscany 45-foot motor coach for a year or more traveling the US. We sold our homes, sold a lifetime of belongings, dropped of the kids at college, continued our jobs on the road, and have had the kick-ass adventure of a lifetime this past year, and have seen so much of the US! We have learned so much! People commonly ask us — What’s the best thing you’ve seen? — an impossible thing to answer, because it’s entirely personal, based on our pre-RVing experiences, values, prevailing weather and our mood at the time. In one year, we have hit 42 states and have driven 25,000 mi ...Read more...

From the site: Life on the Open Road - My 50th State!

Believe it or not, in all my travels, I had only been to 47 states. With Vermont and New Hampshire recently under my belt, the only state left was Maine. Our first stop was Bangor, and there are several attractions right in town.We were welcomed by Paul Bunyan himself. Though not the first Paul Bunyan I've met, this is certainly the largest, at 31-feet tall. Even though Paul's wife, Lucette, has tried to make him eat healthier, Paul still weighs in at 3700 lbs.Remember the Maine! This is the shield and scrolls recovered from the wreckage of the USS Maine, blown up in the Havana, Cuba harbor in 1898.And Stephen King lives here! I love his unique fence, with the spider webs and bats.We went on the short hike on the Orono Bog Boardwalk. ...Read more...

From the site: On the Road of Retirement - Visiting the Nation’s Capitol, Washington D.C.

Since we are close to Washington DC while here in the Shenandoah Valley we decided that we should revisit our nation's capitol. We visited DC several years ago and it was Sharon’s first visit to the capitol city but during our last visit the reflecting pool was drained. Also the Washington Monument was damaged and being repaired due to the unusual earthquake that hit the area back then. Therefore a return trip was in order for her to see these sights and few others  we missed last time. As we did last time we drove over to the Metro Station at Fairfax, Virginia but unlike that visit we came on a Friday after 10am so we were able to park in the metro parking garage for $4.85 for the day. Last time we came before 10 only to disco ...Read more...

Gypsy Journal RV Travel Newspaper - The Wind Is Not Your Friend

From the site: Gypsy Journal RV Travel Newspaper - The Wind Is Not Your Friend

When it comes to kite flying, the wind is your friend, unless you’re in a flat out hurricane. There are different models of kites that will fly in almost 0 wind conditions, and others that perform great in winds over 30 miles per hour. But that’s not the case when you’re an RVer. When you’re driving or towing a high profile vehicle as big as a billboard, the wind is definitely not your friend. It can make for some real white knuckle driving. More than once we’ve been beaten up by the wind, and more than once our first motorhome, a Pace Arrow Vision, was blown from one lane to another in strong winds. We quickly learned to stay off the road when it got too windy. You can’t always trust the weather reports, ...Read more...

As we have said many times, we love traveling with no reservations for lots of reasons but a major factor is the option to be flexible with our plans. We have certainly made the most of this benefit in the last few weeks. We had originally planned to spend all summer in Montana, Wyoming, Northern Idaho with maybe a jaunt into Alberta, Canada. While we were in Montana we had the idea to go visit some old friends of ours back east with some airline miles that will soon be expiring. We researched our options for getting to Boston from the North West and it made most sense to fly from Seattle. After all, we had no firm plans so why not visit Seattle and make the most of our time there.  Iain's sister lives nearby so it seemed like a good pl ...Read more...

Shopping at local farmers’ markets is one of the best ways to give back to your community and the communities you visit in your RV. Fruits and vegetables are seasonal, and picking the wrong ones will make you feel less excited about the meals you create with them. Follow these simple tips for finding the best products at the next farmers’ market you visit. 1. Man In The Maze - Why you might be wrong about everything

From the site: Man In The Maze - Why you might be wrong about everything

This week I bought the Airstream Safari a new set of tires. There wasn’t anything wrong with the old tires, other than being old.  The tire industry makes various recommendations about replacing tires—I’ve heard anywhere from 4 years to 10 years, and the length of time seems to correlate with the confidence the manufacturer has in its product. In this case the tires were Michelin LTX that we installed in January 2010, and although the tires were only used for five years and eight months, they were manufactured in late 2008 and early 2009.  Tires begin to age from the day they are made, not the day they are installed, so I considered these to be nearly seven years old. That didn’t bother me much, but on cl ...Read more...

I always like going to Red Bay.  Red Bay is the home town of Tiffin Motorhomes.  We have found it to be the quickest and easiest place to go to get our motor home (the Roadrunner) serviced.  Since Pam's sister and brother-in-law live in Maynardville, TN we are in this part of the country each year. Getting to Red Bay only takes about 6 hours from there. We usually don't have to wait a long time to get things done and we learn a lot.  We get a chance to talk with people in the Allegro Campgroundto hear the latest on what's getting fixed we find new things to buy in the Parts Store.  We also take advantage of the Tiffin factory tours and learn lots, no matter how many times we take the tour.
