We love exploring America’s back roads and small towns and finding overlooked gems that the tourist brochures never cover. In a series of weekly blog posts we will be sharing some of America’s lesser-known small town museums, historic sites, and oddball attractions, on a state-by-state basis. We don’t have room to cover each and every attraction in every state, but hope to give you some ideas for places to see in your travels. Asheboro: The North Carolina Aviation Museum houses some of the world’s most famous warbirds, a collection of authentically restored, airworthy aircraft dating from World War II through the Vietnam era. The museum also displays a large collection of military uniforms, medals, memorabilia, and h ...Read more...

Carson City, NV We left the beautiful ski area of Park City, UT and continued west on I-80. On the way through the Salt Lake City area we stopped at a truck repair shop to have the front end aligned. While driving through Wyoming we noticed the outside of one of the front tires was showing excessive wear along the outer edge. We had that tire replaced and both tires balanced at Les Schwab in Heber City, UT. Schwab doesn’t have the equipment to do big vehicle alignments so we had it done at GCR Tire in West Valley City, UT. They said the alignment was good but found a loose wheel bearing, which they felt was the cause of our tire wear. After the alignment was completed we continued wes ...Read more...

I researched RVs for almost a year before we settled on the RV we wanted. It took another 6 months to find the one we wanted. If I had the money to just purchase an RV we would have boughten the wrong RV to begin with and traded it in a few times. Actually we would not have traded it in. We probably would have just given up on the idea of living in an RV. I find it interesting to read what people post up when it comes to RV shopping. This RV has good drawers! The fridge is so big! It’s a diesel! Let me save you some time. All RVs have the same heart. They don’t die at 100,000 miles and a gas engine RV can go up and down a hill just fine. Elkhart County 4H FairgroundsGoshen, INLast night we couldn't make up our minds whether to do the potluck breakfast or the haystack breakfast. By the time we got up and about, it was too late for either. No problem, all we've done is eat and socialize. This morning Bill noticed that we had a very small leak in the water heater. It was an added part that let you turn some thingamajig to drain your water tank. Bill had purchased a new anode while we were in White Pigeon, so decided to change it while he removed the other part. Everything went perfectly except the new anode leaked a tiny bit. Bill decided to take it out and put more white tape on it. I was standing there talking with him. &n ...Read more...

Well, today was a much better day. The sun was shining early making for a wonderful lake view from our campsite. And, when Linda got up, she turned our refrigerator on just to see if it may have somehow reset itself. Sure enough, it worked. But now we don't trust it since we don't know why it shut down. We don't want to run it if it shut down due to an overheating situation, so we'll continue with our plan to use the mini-fridge and electric cooler that we purchased last night until we can get an accurate diagnosis. By the time I got the Journal entry for yesterday written, and we got our cold food storage taken care of this morning, it was almost noon. While Dave worked most Mondays it was a day Tom and I both had off. So great to spend time with him, whether it was talking, going for a bike ride or visiting the local water park. I wish this was a post about installing Lithium batteries and a $12,000 solar setup. Sadly what follows are rather more mundane observations about battery maintenance. Our Airstream shipped with two fairly inexpensive Interstate SRM-24 deep cycle batteries. These retail for about $120 each. I have great respect for them – they kept us going for over two days in a blizzard. Unfortunately the lifespan for deep cycle batteries in RV applications seems to be about two years and they don’t age gracefully. This is a function of two things: The standard factory installed charging systems are poor and never fully charge the batteries, which leads to death by sulphation. One of the best resources I have found o ...Read more...

I've been many places over the past few years where the locals will repeat this popular refrain....."If you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes".......that is so true here at Cape Blanco, and Friday was another good example of that. We arrived for our 'top shift' at 1000 hours to sunny, windless skies, but by 1015 the fog rolled in......then back out......then back in.....then back out......then back in and back out once again in the space of an hour. At one point I could not see the lighthouse from my 'greeter' position down at the entrance to the lighthouse station. About to fade to 'white'..... ....and just a few minutes later it was clear once againIt was one of those days when seemingly every visitor had an int ...Read more...

Fort Worden is more than a historic military fort, but I must admit my ignorance – and being completely content with that ignorance – to what else it may have been in the early 1900’s when it was in use. For me, it was all about the bug guns (I’m a dude, sue me) that once occupied the fort and were to be used in defense of any invaders by sea. Although none of the guns still stand where they once did, a museum showed pictures, models, and videos of them in use. They would be a sight for sure, but I happily settled for the huge concrete bunkers and gun placements instead. And this is where I must give it to Washington State for leaving the doors unlocked. We could explore into the dark caverns of the bunkers (with h ...Read more...

We were up at Oh-Dark-Thirty yesterday morning to get the motorhome packed up and ready to go to for an appointment to get both windshields replaced at 10:30. Just before it was time to leave I called to confirm the directions to the shop and they said because it was raining and our RV is too big to fit inside of their bay they couldn’t do it until Monday. I got up that early for nothing? That’s just wrong! A couple of people asked why we didn’t have a mobile windshield installer come to us here at the campground instead of driving to a shop. Bear Den RV Park claims a distinction of which no other RV Park in the United States can boast-Mammoths! Sitting on a hill overlooking the Camas Prairie, this park is in an area that travelers have sought for centuries. Here Native Americans of the Nez Perce Tribe camped before Europeans discovered this fair place. Nearby, Lewis and Clarke camped—rescued with food and shelter by the Nez Perce before winter’s cruel grip could claim them. And here, one of the largest mammals on earth made this their stopping point, Columbian Mammoths!
