On the Road of Retirement - Carolina Brewing Company and the Morgan Horse Show
From the site: On the Road of Retirement - Carolina Brewing Company and the Morgan Horse Show…
Staying a little longer in this area gave us the opportunity to see Katie one last time before leaving, She came to the Fairgrounds to spend one night with us. How lucky we were that the Fairgrounds happened to be hosting the Southern States Regional Morgan Horse Show. We had never been to a show of this type. The Morgan is a breed of horse which is said to be “easily recognized by his proud carriage, upright graceful neck, and distinctive head with expressive eyes”. We walked all around the Hunt Horse Complex at the Fairgrounds and took in the sights. We saw lots of proud owners of these fine horses displaying their colorful stable banners and winner's ribbons. Nearly all the stalls had these displays as well as several ...Read more...

Oh, the Places They Go! - Moon House Ruins Hike
From the site: Oh, the Places They Go! - Moon House Ruins Hike – Bluff, UT
Bluff, UT Sunday was our last full day in southeastern Utah, so we decided to visit one more Puebloan ruins site. Our tour guide, that nimble hiker, had read somewhere about a site called the Moon House Ruins, but it was not listed in our guide book. After a little more research she found that you need a permit from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to visit the ruins, so off we headed for the Kane BLM Ranger Station. After a drive of over fifty miles, we arrived at the Ranger Station and secured our permits ($2/person) and received instructions on visiting the site. They limit permits to 36 a day, so we were happy to find them still available. To get to the site you drive about six miles more down the highway, the ...Read more...

Workin' RVers - back on the road!
From the site: Workin' RVers - back on the road!
This morning we gave hugs and kisses to the kids and grand kids before they all left for work and school. The goodbyes are the worst, lots of crying and sad faces even though we all know we will be back soon it's still hard to leave. When they had all left we finished our packing up and I buttoned up the motor home for travel. I think I must have walked around it eight or ten times making sure I had everything picked up.We pulled out at 9am and drove to Crawfordsville where we topped off the fuel and met our son, Matthew, at the Cracker Barrel for breakfast. Oh no, more goodbyes. :-(We had a nice visit with Matthew and then pointed the rig west. We made several stops at some of the rest parks. When In Roam... - Finding alternative power
From the site: When In Roam... - Finding alternative power
This week, we’re boondocking with family in Corpus Christi. We are having a blast, and love being here, but the decision has presented a few obstacles. We have a place to park (large yard, no HOA, awesome neighbors), and are literally a few feet from typical household amenities, if needed. Our big issue: We need power. Our entire lifestyle depends on our ability to work remotely while we travel. The problem with a “normal” house is that the circuit breakers don’t provide enough amperage to support our setup. We have a 30-amp connection, and most houses have only 15- or 20-amp circuits. Without calling an electrician to set up a connection, we have two options: relocate to an RV park or find an alternate source o ...Read more...

Well we are finally off and made it to our destination at West Lake Park Campground in Davenport, Iowa. What a day! The pets haven’t moved since we turned on the a/c and let them in the 5th wheel around 4pm central time. Leading up to our hitting the road today, we did have a really nice time with our old friends on Memorial Day. Rebecca brought us a “little housewarming gift” which she won at an auction…a gigantic teddy bear skin rug! So huge it is now our bedspread decor…and just GUESS who decided to break it in that night? Well, just look at the pic…but I’m SURE you can guess, given our cat is a freak! Spot Loves Our New Bear Rug So yesterday was take down day…getting geared up t ...Read more...

Roger here..... The Rogue River rolled directly behind our campsite. The entrance to the National Forest trails could not have been closer to our campsite. We walked the dogs along the trails a couple of times every day while we were at the Crater Lake Campground. If we turned right on the trail, we eventually arrived at a small dam and reservoir. Walking across the flow of fast-moving black water.....brought us to a quiet picnic area and a continuation of the trail. If we walked to the left, we could descend to the river and...Take another look at the raging river.Bandido and I were forced to hop around a number of river pools to get the photo on the right.A lot of very green plants also edged the trail. One morni ...Read more...

RV Travel - Products for recreational vehicles. - Portable campfire solution for dry season campfire restrictions
From the site: RV Travel - Products for recreational vehicles. - Portable campfire solution for dry season campfire restrictions
Products for recreational vehicles. This year in much of the west the winter rains ended the end of December and we entered a dry period. Forest fire dangers rose to critical levels and seasonal fires have broken out earlier than normal. What this means to RVers is that there is a strong possibility that there will be campfire restrictions in place for the camping season in the western forests. As in the past this has required campers to build only fires contained in portable, contained fire enclosures such as the Little Red Campfire. This compact, portable campfire is great for campsites with fire restrictions against in-ground fires. Have a campfire wherever you go! Little Red is also ideal for tailgating or on the patio--its ...Read more...

From the site: ROAMING FREE 2010 - Mesa Verde–Day 1
Saturday was the day we had set aside to explore Mesa Verde. By the time we got moving, though, it was already pretty crowded and the ranger-led tours were sold out until late in the afternoon. We decided that there were enough self-guided areas to keep us busy for a good part of the day, so we began the drive towards the Chapin Mesa. As we drove into the park, we were climbing in elevation until we reached the highest point in the park – Park Point Overlook. From this point, we could see Shiprock in the west (faintly, through some haze), and Hesperus Peak in the east. At the overlook, there was also a fire tower that the Park Service Rangers use ...Read more...

Our first destination in Washington State is Deception Pass State Park. It is north of the Seattle area and borders on three lakes and Puget Sound. We didn’t have reservations but lucked into getting spot 2, which is an unreservable site. We really liked this one as it was one of the more private sites, surrounded by large trees and we had a view of Cranberry Lake. After the nightmare drive we had, this was a good spot to unwind for a few days. After setting up, I went for a walk to relax by the water. This bridge links the two sides of the park and offers great views One of the beaches was covered with small stones. This brought to mind an article on rockhounding in the Spring 2013 issue of Airstream Life. So I had to get a picture o ...Read more...

In the last episode of rvsue and her canine crew . . . (No peeking at the slideshow at the end of this post! Eat your dinner before dessert!) We discover Goblin Valley State Park’s campground is full. The BLM “campground” suggested as an alternative by the toll booth lady is too ugly to consider. Our exploration of the canyon directly west of the information kiosk reveals it is filled up with weekend campers and their Off-Highway-Vehicles. I’d rather sleep in a subway tunnel. Home in Rocky Point, Oregon Current temperature: 40 degrees F, with melting snow on the ground. Lo tonight: 30 degrees F with a chance of snow Yes, we are going camping. We are leaving tomorrow for the eastern side of Oregon, planning a combo boondocking/rv park trip to the high sagebrush desert. We did plan to leave on Tuesday afternoon, but some severe weather warnings were a bit daunting, and we decided to postpone our little journey until the weather shifted a bit. Good thing! The tracks seem to hold a mystery, an adventure that needs to be experienced. Where do they lead, what is the nest stop? Who and what has been along this route before now? What does the future hold? The huge OLD Burr Oak tree in the park that welcomes visitors year after year. Seems to have grown a mouth near the top and is getting ready to speak. What stories could it tell? What wisdom could it pass on? The tiny frog hoping along the road, heading to where? Looking for lunch? The river flowing through the park, down stream through the next town, moving on to join up with the Mississippi and eventually the Gulf of Mexico. Think of the travelers that will be skimming it&rsq ...Read more...

Today we went for a drive to another of the Beaver Lake COE campgrounds. This time we wanted to check out Starkey. It was a beautiful day and a drive. Unfortunately we arrived at the campground only to find the gates closed. There were quite a few trees down in the area and the roads were littered with debris from the trees. We are assuming the campground was closed due to storm damage but I haven't been able to confirm that. We decided to check out the Dam Site Campground that is just a few miles away. Whenever I see tourists on Segways, I secretly wish I was the one cruising about town on the awkward two-wheeled device while wearing an unflattering giant helmet. Aside from how silly riding a Segway may appear, the experience always looks fun and I’ve been wanting to give it try. My time finally came when Experience Columbus offered the opportunity to join up with Segaway Tours of Columbus for a two-hour urban excursion. The first 15 minutes or so were spent learning how to ride the Segway. The only tricky part was keeping my balance when first stepping up onto the platform. Once I learned the techniques for going left, right, and stopping, it was a cinch to zoom around the parking lot like a pro. Following the tutorial, our group ...Read more...

After a couple additional minutes of conversation with the family, Jerry then comes inside the office and says to me, “You should listen to them. Before we left Vicksburg, we made a quick stop at the Vicksburg Battlefield and Museum. Lucky for us, as this was the last free day to see this National Park and coincided with the last day our NP pass was valid as we purchased it last April. At $80, we have gotten our money’s worth out of it. We decided to purchase the audio CD that explains the stops along the roadway. As we toured the battlefield via automobile, it became apparent to me just how close the Union line was from the Confederate line; only 50 to 100 yards apart for almost 6 miles around the eastern side of Vicksburg.
