Ray and Cindy's RV Travels - Campground Sights

From the site: Ray and Cindy's RV Travels - Campground Sights

Becket, Massachusetts High 75 Low 48Last night was nice and cool for sleeping. Today was partly cloudy but a nice day.We went for a walk around the Campground and saw some of the sights. There is a nice little stream running through the Park. We saw some small water falls. The park is quite pretty everywhere except for the few sites where we are parked.During our walk we saw a little wild life: two small squirrels, one was a red squirrel which we weren't able to get a picture, and a Turtle sunning himself on a logWe saw a hint of fall colors in some of the small trees. This park even has a Heliport, but we didn't walk to see it. We did get to see someones Gnome garden.Cindy didn't get a picture, but she finally saw the puppy she would like. I ...Read more...

Gypsy Turtles - Is It Mackinac or Mackinaw?

From the site: Gypsy Turtles - Is It Mackinac or Mackinaw?

From the Mackinac Island Visitor Center: I guess that means we are the Gypsy Mackinacs! On Wednesday, we hopped on the Star Line Ferry to Mackinac Island to spend the day. As no motor vehicles are allowed on the island, we struggled with whether or not to take our bikes to explore the island. After vacillating back and forth, we finally chose to leave the bikes home, take a carriage tour and do some exploring on foot. Of interesting note: Mackinac Island was our nation’s second National Park after Yellowstone. It remained a National Park from 1875-1895 when it was taken over by the state of Michigan and became Michigan’s first state park. Over 80% of the island is state park property and remains in a natural state for all ...Read more...

RV Boondocking News - Squeezing watts out of your solar panels -- while shady camping

From the site: RV Boondocking News - Squeezing watts out of your solar panels -- while shady camping

As we're presently traveling in the Pacific Northwest, our boondocking skills are getting a bit of a challenge in an environment so different from the Southwest. Last night when we rolled into bed, we began wondering if we'd maybe need more blankets -- it seemed so cold! But by morning, it seemed like there were too many blankets. What goes on? A little head scratching revealed that when we rolled into bed, the heavy humidity had made the blankets clammy, and by morning, our personal Btu output had driven out the damp, making them much toastier. The transition to the Northwest also has made some kind-of-weather-related changes for us. The Northwest's famous (infamous?) rain makes for the growth of beautiful trees. And that's great on a hot s ...Read more...

That porpoise flashing you a Blue Moon is "Marathon Man" Leonard, diving into freezing water that only a few weeks ago was a block of ice. We were pleasantly surprised by the quantity and quality of flowers persisting into mid august. From the site: Living The Dream... - Wednesday, August 13, 2014 (Monck Provincial Park, Nicola Lake, Quilchena, BC)

The rumbling of thunder woke us up in the wee hours of the morning and then there was the pitter-patter of rain drops, so Steve got up and closed all of the windows. The rain really didn't amount to much but when we got up this morning, it was cloudy/smokey and a lot more humid than it had been. The day proved to be one of those "mixed bag" kind of days...some sun, a bit of rain but mostly cloudy. The area was also under a severe thunderstorm warning "...capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain". Luckily it didn't materialize and the warning was lifted late in the afternoon. With the weather warning, Steve hummed and hawed about whether to go ahead and launch the boat, but decided he might as well. So late morni ...Read more...

One thing I need to keep reminding myself is to ask for referrals from people I know in a given locale for services I need.  When I needed the water pump replaced on the VW I asked Debby (Bill and Debby's Wild Ride) who is from South Lake Tahoe originally.  She referred me to Eloise Autmotive who, in turn, referred me to Higher Ground Autoworx.  Now, when I needed new tires why didn't I call John at Higher Ground first?  I'm still asking myself that question.  Instead, on Wednesday, I head immediately for Les Schwab Tires (a national chain) to get new shoes for the Beetle.  I have bought tires from America's Tire Store, and Discount Tires in the past and had good experience, and always liked the fact they have ...Read more...

Apps for the Open Road I’m attending the big Family Motorcoach Association Reunion and Rally this week in Redmond, OR and just did a seminar called Apps for the Open Road in which I share some of my favorite apps and online resources for RVers. Now we RVers all have our favorite technology devices, with Android and Apple smartphones and tablets accounting for the vast majority. Most apps now come in versions for different platforms. Most, but not all. My talk at the Apps for the Open Road seminar I am a pretty diehard Apple fan. Though I’ve used Android gizmos, I keep coming back to Apple, especially the iPhone. I was recently reminded that any lifestyle can turn mundane.  Living in an RV isn’t special.  Living in an RV is only special when people who don’t live in an RV find out!  As humans we have a large capacity for taking any given outrageous circumstance and turning it normal. If we do something awesome on a regular basis, we forget we are doing something awesome!  We discount our accomplishements very quickly! Did you just run a marathon?  Awesome!  Help me mow the yard! We are a “What have you done lately” kind of people. Great accomplishments are not celebrated very long. Many of the commandments in the Bible are God forcing people to celebrate! God demands we celebrate!  He ...Read more...

This blog and many others will tell you that you should do a thorough inspection annually and doing the inspection becomes more important as times goes on.The problem is, few know even the basics of proper tire inspection. For some it's only looking at the tread to be sure there is some tread pattern available. Others will bend at the waist and look at one sidewall to inspect for large cracks.Well, sorry to say that doing a proper tire inspection is a lot more involved. You will need to get down on the ground, you will get your hands dirty and you will need a good bright work light.
