In the Black Hills: Custer State Park Custer State Park was our favorite spot when traveling the Black Hills of South Dakota. If you want to see an abundance of wildlife along with great scenery, this is a great place to visit. Custer State Park has a Buffalo herd now estimated at 1,800 head. Technically, they are bison, or Tatanka being the indian name, but Americans tend to call them buffalo. We hoped to catch a glimpse of a few buffalo while there. What we saw were hundreds if not a thousand. Most of the herd was found at a single, large prairie where they just hung out and chomped on grass.
