I'm not exactly sure why, but big, honking, and screaming red seem like completely appropriate attributes for a switch that gives a nomad the option of charging his house battery from the alternator.I opted for what may be the simplest way of providing this functionality – run a cable from the positive terminal of the engine battery to the positive terminal of the house battery, and stick a switch in between. A big, honking, and screaming red one in this case. Turning the dial to the "both" setting joins the two batteries so that they'll each receive whatever current the alternator is putting out.
