The LED, or Light Emitting Diode, was invented as far back as 1927 by a Russian with the illustrious name of Oleg Vladimirovich Losev. However, it wasn't until 1962 that Nick Holonyak (an equally impressive name) working at General Electric Corporation produced the first practical LED.
