Wheeling It - Breezing Through Phoenix, Desert Blooms…And Getting Caught!

From the site: Wheeling It - Breezing Through Phoenix, Desert Blooms…And Getting Caught!

BLOOMs in the desert!! Hiking in blankets of yellow! We’ve stopped for a few days in Phoenix. This is really just a quick breeze-through and we’ve had no plans other than stocking up, re-charging and getting ready to head north. We’ve been packing it in too. On the way here we took ”the beast“ through Blue Beacon for a quick wash (rinsing off several months of serious boondocking dust!) followed by some hand waxing at our site (done mostly by Paul, the hardy stud). Then, once we got here we picked up our mail and (dismay of dismay) I realized I’d been caught turning on red by one of the many notorious traffic cameras in Phoenix back in  ...Read more...

Man In The Maze - Slab City

From the site: Man In The Maze - Slab City

Slab City is one of those places that approaches a mythical reputation by dint of repeated reports from “people who’ve been there” and told fantastic tales, like 16th century mariners who encountered sea monsters and the edge of the world.  I won’t confirm or deny anything here; I’ll just say that it’s an American cultural phenomenon and whether that’s good or bad in your mind is entirely up to you. Certainly it’s a good thing by many of the residents, who feel they have escaped the confines of modern society and are living in “the last free place.”  Or so says the bumper sticker that now adorns the back of our Airstream. For those who don’t know, Slab City is a col ...Read more...

Gone RVing! - It is DejaVu all over again

From the site: Gone RVing! - It is DejaVu all over again

We are back at Cypress Camping Resort in Myrtle Beach. We arrived to the bad news that they are no longer a Coast to Coast resort. Luckily we had reserved our site before they left the system so no worries. They are now AOR (Adventure Outdoor Resorts) so we will have to decide if we will purchase this membership. The good thing about AOR is that they have 8 resorts in Ontario and at just $9 a night it may be a membership to consider. There are also a lot of campgrounds all over the US. While we were here at Myrtle Beach we spent almost every day with our lovely friends, Russ and Trixie, who hail from Gravenhurst. They have been here since the beginning of February and will leave in the next few days. They are renting a small house in Sur ...Read more...

Long Long Way To Tipperary - Good Times with Good Friends

From the site: Long Long Way To Tipperary - Good Times with Good Friends

I can tell when my family and I are having a really good time on the road. I fall way behind on updating the blog and I start getting emails from people asking me what’s going on since they’re not getting updates. I’m sorry we’re having too much fun  Darn us! These past few weeks have been a whirlwind, but in a good way. We stayed 16 nights in the Thousand Trails Orlando campground which is probably the most popular Continue reading → ...Read more...

Imperfect Destiny - Adios Casita

From the site: Imperfect Destiny - Adios Casita

March 31, 2013—We delivered our Casita to its new owner yesterday in West Texas. She was the first person to contact us and had been looking for a fiberglass egg in which to full-time for a while. She got the whole shebang—the solar system, AGM batteries, and barely-used generator. Here’s the last pic of our Casita at its new home; a blank slate ready for the new owner to make it her own. We bought a Casita not knowing how long we’d use it but knowing that it should be easy to sell if things didn’t work out. Well it worked out much better than expected and two-and-a-half years later, we have great memories, have made many new friends, explored a lot of nooks and crannies in the States, and have been able to sp ...Read more...

Ramblings of a Techno-Viking - helendale

From the site: Ramblings of a Techno-Viking - helendale

Helendale Road BLM To escape the heat, I moved from the low desert near Yuma to the high desert near Victorville. My current camp is off Helendale Road between Adelanto and Helendale, north of the Airport that is mainly used for storage of older jumbo jets that are no longer in service. The area north of Victorville is dotted with patches of BLM land. My campsite is at a wide spot on BLM road 6120 where it intersect another dirt road. Both appear to be maintained to service the water pipe running parallel to them. There is a BLM survey marker from 1959 here. TV signals are mostly strong analog rebroadcasts of Los Angeles stations, and both Verizon and T-Mobile signals are good. (The speed of the Verizon internet connection is in ...Read more...

Man In The Maze - Where’s there’s smoke … we aren’t

From the site: Man In The Maze - Where’s there’s smoke … we aren’t

I do hate to go off on rants in the blog, but hey, if you don’t rant once in a while it’s not really a blog is it? I usually confine my moments of exuberance or frustration to relatively benign things like yogurt and recycling, but today’s events gave me the perfect opportunity to talk about something just slightly more controversial: camp fires. I mentioned in yesterday’s blog that we were being bugged by the smoke from fires in the state park campground. Each of the two evenings we were there—as I was shutting the windows and turning on the air conditioner to escape smoke blowing in—I was thinking that it would be great to get back to the open desert where our nearest neighbor would be hundreds of fee ...Read more...
