   In the 1600s nearly 150 longhouses stood on this property, making Ganondagan  the largest Seneca town. The Senacas were keepers of the western border of the lands belonging to the confederation of Iroquois people. They controlled traffic that passed through which was very important for the fur trade. In 1687 the village was attacked by the French who wanted to eliminate competition from the Iroquois trappers.The Senecas never returned to live in the burnt out village although they did use the fields for crops.    A short video is shown in the visitor center.
